I live in the Chicago suburbs and hit stores in southern Wis and around the burbs,I'm in Louisville KY now and it's everywhere, I saw some dated 6/14. Just about any Ipa lover would not buy this double ipa that is past it's prime, should it be priced lower or kept at what it is now? Is Founders losing money or is their price point covering all of this old product sitting on the shelves? This isn't a big deal I'm just bored and wondering about others opinions. It's a good beer when fresh but at this point a lot of old beer gone to waste that won't sell.

Seriously! I remember thinking THREE months ago that this stuff shouldn't still be on shelves and yet it is sitting cases stacked on cases at my local specialty shops. Maybe there sales of the other big hits and staples more than makes up for this apparent dud.

Founder's product has been bought. The beer shops are losing the money. They should have discounted it.

I noticed the same thing at my local beer store. There's Double Trouble from June on the shelves. I was going to buy some until I noticed the date, and then I was too reluctant to. As much as I hate seeing it go to waste, I want to wait until next year and buy it fresh.

I bet that'll turn into a great barleywine in a few months.

World class barleywine for sure. They're doing the aging legwork for you. It's a steal.

I think Founders problem is either ego or greed. Not everything they put out is worthy of a 4 pack or bomber format(including double trouble). 6 packs of centennial and porter with "normal" price points are the only reason why I haven't written founders off.

I love a lot of Founders offerings, but I find DT disappointing. The slight dankness is off-putting for me.

In a perfect world, yes everything would be in 6 packs - I don't love the trend towards 4 packs either. BUT they've been discussed ad nauseum on here, and we know why it happens, so I don't think Founders needs to be singled out for greed/ego - that's fairly ridiculous.

Its a conspiracy. They held some double trouble just to put on the shelves now so double trouble gets lower reviews than other DIPAs...lowering Founders overall reviews and getting them out of the best brewery ever conversation and into the most overrated brewery conversation. :grimacing:

Nah. Founders probably just produced too big of a batch this year since a lot of their other beers fly right off the shelves. Double Trouble is good, but not a world class IPA so hopheads aren't after it. Now its old so it will sit longer.

I don't even like this beer fresh let alone 6 months old, really at any price. It's not a BW, imo they never turn into even a good one let alone world class, it wasn't brewed for that.

Talkin' ego & greed...how bout the merchants that obviously bought & paid for the product but refuse to discount the old stock when it doesn't move. Beer such as this is more often bought by those in the know & not your average noob, so if you think noobs are going to unload all the old stock you're dreaming...hell even at a discount most of us would pass on it for fresh.

It's a travesty you have so many choices that you can't make up your mind for long enough to rock on a single beer that you'll probably drink the isht out of until it's kaput. It's now a barleywine and someone did the cellar work for you.

Its old because its overpriced. There are far better dipas available in 6 pack formats for less.

A lot sitting around here too. I think the problem with releasing a hoppy seasonal is knowing how much to produce. A year round IPA gets new, fresh batches constantly put out, replacing older batches. With a one and done, the leftovers just sit around all year.

The shop I work in just got about 30 cases of Double Trouble in. We have it on sale for $30 a case, but we also got it from the distributor on sale. If anybody lost money on this it was our distributor or possibly Founders.

This is how you solve the problem! I would totally pick some up at $5 a 4 pack, just not at the usual $10.

I have seen a lot of double trouble too - but there is no more of an excess of it than Firestone Walker Double Jack that is piling up in Chicago stores with dates just as old... :slight_frown:

I am also still seeing Devil Dancer on shelves at $20+ a 4 pack. Fool me once, but at that price it will sit for years.

I think the time is coming soon when some of these beer stores start managing their stock more efficiently - retail margins on beer are too low to be able to discount like the post above unless the distributor is passing on the discount - most stores only make a few bucks per 4/6 pack, so any meaningful discount makes the beer less than cost for the store and they make a loss.
