Two of my favorite DIPA's are Hercules (Great Divide) and Burton Baton (DFH), both classified as DIPA's but both of which definitely have Barleywine qualities. Are there any other DIPA's that have similar hop and malt profiles that can be classified as either style as I would love to try more brews of this type.

Double Crooked Tree, especially if it's anything other than super-fresh.

Well, any DIPA will transform into a world class barleywine if you age it long enough.

You took the words right out of my keyboard.

What's the difference between some DPA's and Barleywines? About 15 months in your cellar...

(I am NOT saying all DPA's can/should be aged and magically become Barleywines...)

People who say that old or even just malty DIPA's taste like barleywine make me wonder if they've actually had a barleywine before.

Breckenridge 471 Small Batch IPA is a great DIPA, which is unique and musty.

I didn't like Heavy Seas Big DIPA, but it's basically a barleywine disguised as a DIPA, so it should be up your alley when it's in season..

I completely agree with what you said about Big DIPA. Unfortunately though, Heavy Seas retired it due to a higher demand for other beers they offer :slight_frown:

I didn't know they retired it, but I'm not complaining. They should make a DIPA that compliments the quality of Loose Cannon.

I've never really understood this DIPA Barleywines transformation thing, but I just recently tried Southern Tier Unearthly and Gemini that were around 2 months old, and they both had some Barleywines characteristics. Definitely see some potential in these.

So I have one more Crooked Tree left, would it be worth it to hold onto it and see what happens, if so how long? Also, rodeo clown from karbach brewery is a great BW that pretends to be a dipa
