My better half is bugging me about stuff I might want for Christmas and amongst other things brewing related, I'm looking for a decent digital thermometer. I've had some growing pains with my new BIAB system and efficiency has been an issue despite the plethora of temperature reading devices I have on hand but don't have much faith in.

I'm looking for something similar to the KH/KM 14 that NB sells or something similar to a thermapen; Reasonably quick readout time, easy to calibrate, water resistant, $20-$40. Any and all input is very welcome.

I agree with PortLargo as far as how fast your wallet can take you. I like my Thermapen, and on the strength of 2 years experience with it, would recommend the company for their other, less pricey models. Look to be closer to $40 than $20, and I expect you will get a good unit from them or one of the other brands that are out there for that price point.

No such thing. I've gone through a dozen digital thermometers over the years. Longevity has always been an issue. And they always seem to crap out when I need them (actually, that's as silly as saying the furnace only breaks during the heating season - duh!). I bit the bullet a few years ago and bought a Thermapen. I haven't looked back.

That said, I can't argue with bgjohnston - Thermoworks has an excellent reputation, built largely on their thermometers. While not definitive, I'm inclined to believe that they would tend to not sell crap.

I have the Thermoworks Super Fast Water-Resistant Digital Pocket Thermometer and I am happy with it. It does have a slower (5 seconds) response time but doesn’t personally bother me; I can wait 5 seconds.

    Cheers!

most anyone around here who has a thermometer from Thermoworks is going to tell you to not bother with anything else.

just get something from Thermoworks already. the Thermapen is king but pricey. i have the RT600C and it works perfectly. having a narrow accuracy range is important for all grain brewing. you can't get as accurate as the RT600 for $16.00.

Look to Thermowork, like everyone else said.

I have a Thermapen and haven't looked back. Handles everything from brewing, to cooking to smoking that I use it for, and it's accurate, and fast as can be.

They have some cheaper models, that won't do it all, but they will all probably give you some accurate temps.
