I did. I had a 2012 that I cellared for 2 years. Drank it when DD 2014 came out. It had mellowed a bit, not much hop left, still boozy and pretty damn malty.

According to these definitions - more malt-forward/high residual sweetness, high ABV - shouldn't Hopslam be better classified as a TIPA than DIPA? Almost seems like the sin qua non to me.

So with most opinions, Sierra Nevada's Hoptimum is a barley wine, and Devil Dancer is, as well??? Hoptimum, when fresh is a DIPA. Aged?? I don't think I would recommend it.

Let's also take a second to address the fact that "triple ipa" is not really a thing. The term double ipa comes from the acronym for imperial ipa being IIPA. DOUBLE "I" PA.

Knee Deep has some of the best out there. Simtra, Hoparillo, Hop De-Ranged & Hop Shortage. They're all good.

I completely agree with all of the above. The irony though is that if you ask people for their favorite "hoppy/american barleywines" instead of "Triple IPA", you'll get a different set of answers. I don't think that makes them distinct styles, but certainly a name can make people's expectations are different. (See also "stouts vs porters" and "hoppy/american pale ale vs session IPA")

I can see where those quotes are coming from but when drinking Boneyard's Notorious or Knee Deep's Simtra & Hoparillo they really have very little in common with a hoppy barleywine. With the glowing yellow / orange color and impressive grapefruit flavors, there's no BW like Notorious. Great Divide is one of my favorite readily available hoppy barleywines and there's no way you'd mistake this for anything IPA-ish.

I'm not a brewer but I imagine there's a big difference in the hop varieties chosen, the malts chosen, and the brewing process that distinguishes a hoppy bw from a triple IPA.

I think its a stupid moniker and do not personally recognize it as a style. Although maybe people said that about DIPA's back in the day.

Who will be the the first to market a Triple Stout? Avery and The Bruery really missed the boat with beers like Mephistopheles and Black Tuesday.

Really i have no problem with the term triple ipa or black ipa for that matter. Whether they make sense or not because those terms DO give me a good idea of whats in the bottle.

Knee Deep's Hop Deranged calls itself a Quad IPA. It's actually well blended, given it's name. Great beer!
