I dislike beer nerds, and I am one.

Unfortunately many places went that route this year, not just Whole Foods but the fact that their beer buyer stated that most of their beer went to employees pissed me off.

Ha! Touche! Same here. It's just...that's still your job, you know? When I worked retail I didn't treat people like shit or lie to them just because I didn't like them or "their type." I guess I'm too much of an idealist though, especially in an industry that is so cutthroat when it comes to new beer releases.

Hmmmm.... About 20 minutes ago the guy told me he only had regular. They price gouged last year too.

When Beer Bistro Madison tapped Prop last Wednesday it was gone in about 15 minutes too. He literally just tapped it and continuously poured prop until it was gone. 1/6 barrels don't last too long when demand is this high.

Indeed. These are the same guys that charge $20+ for Zombie Dust. Galleria on Southport does the same thing.

Yeah, I get it. I also get the whole "customer's always wrong" mentality from when I worked retail. I treated most people well, but I looked very unkindly on people who tried to pull shit over on us. This includes assholes who would come in to Jewel with their entire extended family every holiday to try cleaning out our deeply discounted stock of soda so they could resell it at $1.50/bottle in corner stores. Or (at Target) people who would "rent" clothing/shoes by buying them Friday and returning them Monday. Those people didn't get service with a smile.

I wonder how much of this can be attributed to the "foodie effect", where a good portion of the crowd is there only because they heard/read that this beer is the current hotness, much like the burgers at Au Cheval were last week, or doughnuts from Doughnut Vault were the week prior.

In contrast, The Beer Temple's tasting was a calm, civilized, not-at-all-crowded, leisurely affair...I suspect because it occurred before Thrillist, Chicagoist, Eater, the Trib, USA Today, New York Times, GQ, etc., etc., etc. all started breathlessly hyping BCBS in the days leading up to Black Friday.

Gold Crown is the worst. They jack up the prices on everything.

Makes me sad I didn't have time to go to the Beer Temple that day...

Oh for sure, I always assumed that the customer was wrong (still do, honestly). I just tried to treat them straight-up either way. But I don't begrudge people trying to weed out the shady characters. I just don't think lying to a random guy is particularly cool, but I guess there's no way to judge intent, after all.

Wanted to share a good release story. My local shop got their shipment yesterday and told people they were releasing at 5pm. I showed up about 4:30, got a post-it note with a number on it. They were handing out notes 1-24 for the 12 bottles of Vanilla and 12 bottles of Prop they received. Earlier numbers got their choice of whatever they wanted (Prop was the heavy favorite in this crowd). Just thought it was cool that the store owner/employees gave all of their bombers to customers and the process was smooth.

Well, given that I had a '13 Prop at the end of October, and it had completely fallen off...

There's some bottle variation. Plenty of people have said it hasn't fallen off lately.

No way. That 2013 Prop's gonna have nothing left...the coconut's gonna be long gone.
