Well..I know what I'm going to be doing this week. Commence Operation: Troll the Interwebs, until I find a keg tapping within driving distance. This unicorn must tap dance on my tastebuds!

It will be so nice to have the chance to drink it fresh so I don't have to hear about how it's fallen off.

the base beer of CBS is not breakfast stout....so not technically a variant....same with KBS. Different base beers.

At least that's what I've always read. Please correct me if I'm wrong....I'm sure someone will.

The only thing I can assure you of without ever having tasted the original or this re-release is that it tasted much better 3 years ago. They probably changed the recipe.

I would highly doubt that Founders would change their recipe on something like CBS. Why would you? Was a mythical beer before bottles and was highly coveted when it was bottled. Being someone who had it fresh long before the bottle release, I will be glad to see if it is as good as I remember it, with the added bonus of people who had it from the bottle 2 years after release for the first time to give it a fair shake rather than just using the "it's fallen off" line.

Lost on you, internet sarcasm was?

I love Founders and can't wait to try this for the first time.

Interesting! Maybe this will pull all the whale-hunters out of the Chicagoland area, and over to Michigan!

As someone who had the original, but has not had this recent batch, I can confirm that the original was way better.

I was under the impression the FBS was the base beer for CBS, the base beer for KBS was a completely different beer.

Ashley's in Ann Arbor is having a Founders tap takeover thing all week. Tapping KBS tonight. I wonder if CBS will make an appearance sometime this week...

I think they might be different. Going off the labels, FBS has oats and is described as a "double oatmeal stout." I think CBS doesn't have oats and it's described as an "imperial stout"

I have no definitive information in front of me, I just seem to remember hearing that FBS was the base beer for CBS. Most of Founders maple barrel experiments around the time of CBS origin started with existing beers, this seems to strengthen what I seem to remember.

Another article from The Mad Fermentationist seems to support this theory as well. Michael is a credible source who generally does an excellent job of fact checking.
    http://www.themadfermentationist.com/2009/11/breakfast-stout-riff.html
"The commercial description of CBS on ratebeer says "Maple barrel aged Breakfast Stout." Its slightly higher ABV could be due to the residual maple syrup fermenting."
