So i'm gonna do a blind tasting with my brother and brother in law. We are gonna do one with mostly available to semi available porters. I'm not gonna take a beer run or nothing to get some. I'm in Chicago so we get a pretty good selection of beer. So far I have GL Edmund Fitz, Founders Porter and Black Butte. Anyone have any more suggestions of some I can get that I wouldn't have to trade my arm to get? I have about two weeks so a trade is doable but i'd rather get ideas of stuff I can get from the store.

I suggest putting some standards in there that are available everywhere, like sierra nevada porter, maybe anchor porter...both good. I did this about a year ago, and was surprised by the results (it helps if you do it blind).

US only? If not, my money would be on Taddy!!

I thought I was doing standards lol. Maybe it is by me :stuck_out_tongue:. I'll try to throw those in but I don't remember seeing an anchor porter. I will look. Thanks!

I agree with barrybeerdog. Unless you want to stick to American Porters, throw a good import or two into the mix. Samuel Smith's and/or Fuller's should be easy to find.

This is excellent advice. If you just go and cherry pick your entries, you've already skewed this "blind" tasting. Throw in some easy to find brews. They will both balance out the field, and, more importantly, let you critically re-experience them. You will be surprised with the outcome!

Sounds like you'll have a great time.

Another English Porter that is worthwhile: Fuller's London Porter.

    Cheers!

No doubt, Taddy and Fullers are both really good; and the beers US porters tried to copy.

It doesn't get mentioned all that often, but Bell's Porter is a pretty great beer.

Oh I do have one of those chillin. Why didn't I think of that. But it is vanilla. Kinda wanted to stick to straight porters to make it fair yaknow

Not in the Founders or Great Lakes category, but I liked Revolution's Eugene. I also agree with Sierra Nevada and Anchor. Solid and available.

Arcadia's London Porter is a good one, and it should be available in your stores.
