So does anyone else back up their beer rates, reviews and data? I have it on a USB,CPU and online cloud just in case anyone else go to extremes to save their data?

On your CPU, huh? You know that is not a data storage device, but rather a processing unit? Anyways, yeah, I back up my reviews in good ol' MS Excel.

I sorta wish I'd done that forever ago, but I'm not that organized. That's a small part of why I use this website, and if that data was lost, it would be disappointing, but not devastating.

Nope. In the long run, it isn't something I'm too worried about. I drink beer because I like it. Keeping track of my beers, and how I rate them, is just an extra bit of fun. It's not necessary, and I wouldn't be too bothered if I lost all of my ratings.

Funny you mention this. I just got super paranoid the other day and decided to email our word doc to myself as a loose backup.

Anyone know of an automated way to save the data? Some kind of html scraper? Be cool if the Bros. gave access to some of the back end APIs. Although the excess load may not be welcome.

No, it's not that big of a deal to me. Majority I have are on BA, but about half of those are on Untappd.

Even though that's definitely something I would do, I have not. I have to separate the engineer in me and the beer lover otherwise it's just not as enjoyable.

Having said that, I agree with the above comment that it would be a cool feature to download your beer ratings from BA into a .csv format for viewing/sorting within Excel.

No backup here, I dont really write reviews either, other than whats in our 33 beers book (which I think is full). I only rate beers on here, I dont think Ive rated a single untappd checkin, usually I remember if I like the beer or not, that and im lazy.

I did make this sweet notebook with all intentions of rating and reviewing and listing all the beers I have in my cellar, but that notebook still sits untouched.

Well, good for you... I'm an engineer, and it shows in everything I do (just ask my wife). On a related note, I would like to point out that engineers are not boring people... they are just people who get excited about boring topics!

See above comment about engineering showing though... I go the other direction. I use Excel as my note-taking and review-making application. I enter the comments for the review itself into Excel, I record the beer's name, brewer, ABV, and IBU in the spreadsheet, and I enter the numbers for Look, Smell, Taste, Feel, Overall. I have "reverse engineered" the apparent formula for computing the "Your Rating" number, so I compute that as well. I enter the raw numbers as BA defines them, and I have a conversion from those into the appropriate scale for reviews on Rate Beer, and I've reverse enginnered their rating formula as well. This spreadsheet sits on Dropbox, and is also backed up (along with everything else on my computer(s) and Dropbox) by my regular local and cloud backups.

    I know, it is a sickness... :slight_frown:

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot... I also have my own A+ though F scale. This generally maps well with the BA numbers, but not always, since it is more of a "did I enjoy it or not, and how much" scale, rather than a review scale.

Agreed on the feature...I just thought about doing it and then opted not to because it would be a pain to format

lol Our wives should talk

"Excited about boring topics" is spot on. And of course having read through your response you have me intrigued by this idea. I may have already looked at the HTML code of the "my beer" page to see how much effort it would be pull the data from there. I'm liking the deeper dive approach you've taken as it's much more in-depth than a simple rating.

You've spread the sickness and I now have a mini project for the upcoming holiday break.

I used to have my beer 'hads' list in a raw text doc, until I stumbled across this site a few years back, and loaded them all onto here in a matter of a few days. People probably thought I was a raging alcoholic.

...but yea, I haven't backed them up in a few years, so if something were to happen, I'd be screwed. There should be an option to download a PDF format of your 'hads' list. I don't think it'd be that hard to do. OR, you could download http://awesomescreenshot.com/ , which creates screen captures of an entire web page. It could work.

I back mine up and I'm very happy to hear that I'm not the only one who does it. I was worried that maybe I was a little paranoid or obsessive-compulsive. I feel better now.

I use BA to backup my Untappd scores and vice-versa. I also back these up with an Excel spreadsheet which is also backed up in the cloud. I'm not all that paranoid about my scores disappearing, but the spreadsheet just gives me something to do when I'm bored and backing it up to the cloud happens automatically.

Here's what my spreadsheet looks like:

Too much work for zero reward. In 20 years will I even care what I drank in 2014? Will I give a crap that I thought CBS was terrible out of the bottle. Probably not.
