Looking for some recommendations for an affordable"special" beer to share with the fatherin law this Christmas. Open to any style but a high abv would be good (11%+)

I just grabbed some Epic Big Bad Baptist. Close to 11% and I've only heard great things. For $12 this May be an option. Not sure where in NJ you are but I got my bottle at Jersey City Buy Rite bottom shelf with a bunch left.

If you can still find in Barrel Aged Narwal, @ around 18.99 or Stone Enjoy By 12/26 not as high abv but can't go wrong there.

Don't know where in NJ you live, but Alesmith Speedway Stout is a nice sipper, 12% abv, and not expensive. Pa and NJ get full Alesmith Distro, you might have to drive, looks like NJ is limited, but you could make a few calls too.

All of the above suggestions are good. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, then maybe something from Great Divide (a Yeti, maybe?), a Stone Russian Imperial Stout, a Southern Tier Back Burner (barley wine) or something along those lines wouldn't set you back much.

When I'm looking for a bomber to split with my old man, I go right to the Belgian section of my bottle shop. Hasn't failed me yet.

My late father in law (RIP) liked Bud, couldn't stand my Falstaff and High Life. Shared a Bell's 12 yr old Scotch with him and I think I scored some points. If he was around today, I'd turn him on to a nice Farmhouse Ale. He was a good guy and I think he would have liked it. Boulevard Tank 7 comes to mind.

St. Bernardus Abt 12 or their Christmas ale. Good looking and good tasting brews to share!

I'd pick a good Christmas beer. Affligem Noel or a similar Belgian is a great novelty to share.

I'd say Chimay Blue. Easy to find, affordable, and damn good.

The good news is there are a lot of large format bottles for under $20. Belgian ales (Duvel, La Chouffe, Tripel Karmeliet) are often worth drinking, and there are a number of other beers which are worth delving into.

$26.99 for three 750mL's. You get to try their quad before and after barrel aging, and have a fresh hoppy Belgian Tank 7 if those two aren't enough. Cheers!

That's a great bundle of beers - I'd snap one of those up.
