I just read an article in the Madison paper about local startups that have their fridge stacked with local beer. Studies show productivity/creativity peeks at about 2 drinks. Does anyone out there work in offices where beer flows(I need to get a new job)?

We do bottle shares after work pretty frequently. There have been a few situations where we did them at lunch if our schedules didn't align after work. These shares ofter include our CEO and he would be the one to "ok" the occasional lunch time share.

There has been talk about putting some taps in at our new space but nothing has come of it yet. But yeah beer is definitely engrained in our culture here. Many of us share society memberships so it works out well do drink those beers together here.

As a creative agency I think this all works out really well. Not sure how it would work out for other industries.

I most certainly do not work in an office where any alcoholic drinks are permitted. As a CPA I deal with a lot of public companies and information we deal with is very sensitive. Cant be getting too creative up in here.

One of my clients though stack the fridges with Amstel light and champagne. Although I've never seen them drink any of it.

Productivity/creativity peaks after a couple of beers? Call me old-fashioned (ripe old age of 33), but I can't see that happening. At least not in the industry I work in.

When I used to live and work in London, we would always go and have a couple of beers during Friday lunchtime. Friday afternoon was definitely not productive. Creative...possibly

Someone get Google to research and implement this. They were voted the best workplace environment (and lets admit, they are killing it nowadays), and they'll be the trend setters.

But seriously, I think there is an upside and downside. Student perspective: If I have to write a paper, I will not drink. I won't be able to be as coherent or as clear-minded when developing an argument. However, if this is about creativity, I think this may be founded. People are looser and are more likely to speak their minds. You'll probably get better brainstorming. I can see this making sense.

I think I read somewhere that a small amount of alcohol can spark creativity. The basic message of the article was that if you need to start working on something drink a beer. If you need to keep working on something switch to coffee, as the caffeine can help people focus once the ball is rolling.

That said, my office doesn't drink, although I don't think it's specifically prohibited. There has been a bottle of champagne in the fridge for a long time. I don't think anyone knows how it got there or what it's for.

Funny, I just posted this photo last week on 'what beer are you drinking now' thread. Had a Madtree Thundersnow at work (a winter warmer of about 8.5% abv) and I did not see production/creativity increasing. I'm a graphic designer, and a lot of the work that I did that afternoon after drinking it, I had to do again the next day. I guess it could work on some people, but for me, 2 beers just makes me sleepy.

I once came back from my hour lunch break after having two pints of, Blazing World by Modern Times, and I was couple of things, creative wasn't one of them. I probably should've took the time to actually have lunch.

As a soon to be fellow CPA (one exam left) I can't imagine anyone in the office getting work done while drinking during the day. Although it would make meetings with clients more amiable.

I'll call you new fashioned; all the oldtimers at the office I used to work at liked to reminisce about the 70s, where everyone drank like fish at lunch time, and came back to an office filled with debauchery.

I generally craw back into my studio after lunch on a day with an open afternoon. If a client is coming in I will usually try to keep lunch to 1 or 2 slayed whalez/loons so I can maintain my composure.

If it's a very small company with grown ups you trust to handle it, a beer or two at lunch is no big deal and can be good for morale. That being said if I was calling the shots there would be no way in hell I would authorize it. It seems like begging for liability problems. It only takes one idiot to abuse the good intentions and you're screwed. It's simply not worth it.

I visited the Bell's production facility this weekend. While attending the tour, our guide mentioned something about a shifty. I asked him what that was but I figured it out before he could reply. He said he gets to drink a beer everyday he works when he takes a break.

I wish I could have a shifty at work.

I've worked in a few ad agencies, and they have all had beer on tap or available. My old agency had a local brewery working in IT, so we had a few of his beers on tap. A nice beer to wind down the thursday or friday or the ability to have a beer during a company meeting is always a morale booster in my opinion.
