I saw on twitter today they are barrel aging their next beer in the series in whiskey barrels, however no indication of style or timeline. I'm very excited to finally see something though, because Schell's usually hits it out of the park with this series.

It's been awhile since Stag #8 hasn't it? Was that the Maibock?

I thought it was the blonde dopplebock collaboration. It has been way to long. Excited for the series to continue!

    This is very cool news.

They mentioned something about the aging period being 2-3 months on Facebook which led to a lot of guesses on what the base beer might be.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that the base beer will be Schmaltz's Alt.

That would be awesome to try a barrel-aged version of that glorious beer.

They already did a barrel aged version of the alt. I doubt they will do that one. Maybe the grand cru from this year?

There are three points that I'd like to make before someone reports this post for derailing the thread:

    1. They did? Darn, I must've forgotten (oh, wait: no I didn't forget. I sampled it straight from the tank pre-bottling. )
    2. My suggestion was (mostly) made in a manner which was first codifed as: "tongue-in-cheek", back in the late 1800s.
    3. "Stag Schmaltz" had enough disappointing reviews (being neither wild nor bourbon-y) that a new treatment is sensible.

    Okay, I'm probably just wrong.

stag 9 will be a strong black(ish) lager that will be about half barrel aged in our original lagering caves underneath the brewery, blended with the remainder aged in stainless. 40 barrels is about all that we can fit in the old caves, this the blending

No, you're not wrong; The beer I sampled from the tanks was Stag Series #1. I was just saying that -since we were all playing the guessing game- it wouldn't surprise me if they decide to try an American-Whisk(e)y barrel treatment of Schmaltz's Alt, sort of as a re-boot to the Stag Series. I was also throwing it out there as an easy guess since Schmaltz was recently brewed for the season, and with the timing of those barrels, it was a 2 + 2 = 5 deal for me.

I sincerely apologize if I confused you or gave you or anyone else the wrong impression. :slight_frown:

I have to ask. Do you work for Schell's, or do you just have good connections?

The answer is that neither do I work for August Schell, nor do I have good connections (there or anywhere else.)

I'm just a stupid beergeek on the internet with a big, fat, mouth.

I *did* taste the base (Schmaltz's Alt) beer that became Stag Series #1 prior to bottling (back in 09? '10?) and I was merely making a very badly-educated guess at what it might be this time around, and that's all. See my previous post.

I'm sorry to all and sundry for whatever possible confusion that my stupid-ass posts may have caused (I probably drink too much before/when I post) and I want to give proper THANKS to @unterhopft for clearing it all up!
