I wouldn't know. I hate Rolling Rock. Give me a PBR or Old Style instead.

Nope it's still just as awful as before.

How recent are we talking about here? It's probably been close to 6 months since I've had one.

And it's nice to see another BA who's humble enough to admit Rolling Rock isn't terrible. It's certainly nothing great, but people over-hate on it, especially on this site. It's one of the easier macros to put down in my opinion.

Yeah I drink crafts quite a bit. You can read my reviews. Sometimes though, I just like to come home from work, kick back, and tip a few. I don't enjoy doing that with porters, stouts, IPAs, or anything of relative strength. I want to watch my TV shows and not think about what I'm drinking. Rolling Rock did the trick for awhile, but now I'm forced to think about it because something changed and I don't like it one bit.

I just bought a case 2 weeks ago. The design went from something like this ...

to a more bold, etched looking logo. I hoped it wouldn't change things but somehow it did. The time before last I probably bought a case about a couple months prior. They shouldn't have messed with it in the first place...the VERY first place...

Apparently you needed to be farther "north" --- like South Carolina.

Unless it has changed into a real Craft beer I wouldn't know. Yuk

Really? So, Lone Star bought your only brewery (Progress) only to close it by the early '70s --- and then never shipped you their cute little "Texas Cooler" 7 oz'ers?

Rolling Rock holds a special place in my heart even though I've never tried it.

It was my late grandfather's favorite beer. He would get drunk off of it and then hurl Croatian profanities at my grandmother. Good times.

@The-Adjunct-Hippie - We haven't changed the recipe or the brewing process; the package art change was just that. As @jesskidden said earlier in the thread, we intentionally brew it with higher DMS to replicate the original flavor (in other brands the DMS would be considered a defect or process abnormality).

As to why your particular 6-pack tasted different, it's hard to say. Antiseptic could mean several things; I associate it with things like that numbing throat spray stuff and flavor compounds like 4-ethylphenol. It's unlikely, but possible, that the beer had a low level microbe load that produced off-flavors in the package (but don't worry - any microbes capable of surviving in beer aren't pathogenic and won't hurt you - they only hurt the beer). Rolling Rock is pasteurized, but that's not always 100% effective.

It's also possible that something you ate during or just before you had a beer influenced your perception of it. That's actually pretty common and that's why we're not allowed to eat in the 2 hour window prior to attending a sensory panel.

You can always call the beer hotline (1-800-342-5283) and let them know something was off with your beer. We actually do like to hear about it and we track complaints to make sure there isn't some sort of problem that we didn't catch already. They'll probably hook you up with some beer to replace what you had.

It sure tasted good in college. We used to crush 1/4 barrels of it after Rugby games... Good times!

Rolling Rock - From the glass lined tanks of Old Latrobe, we tender this premium beer for your enjoyment as a tribute to your good taste. It comes from the mountain springs to you.

Not sure this is premium beer now..maybe it was on a college budget...

Good thing it didn't taste "nearly as awful", can't imagine what that would have been.

i don't think they necessarily carry more weight. i just thought it was incidentally a perfect description of the beer. why you trying to pick a fight where there is none? :slight_frown:

I have no fond memories of this beer. I don't know about you guys but, after I killed 4 + ponys in one sitting I'd have projectile shit storms the morning after. Made me switch to Hamm's... Which clearly is a beer that tastes like the can its in.
A slight upgrade if you ask me.

I haven't had Rolling Rock in ages, but I suddenly feel the urge to go get a six. Then we can compare notes.

Generally speaking AALs are all the same to me except for the packaging, so I never bothered to try Rolling Rock, but I'm curious now about the purposeful DMS "flaw." Next time I'm out I'm going pick some up. Besides I have lived in PA for over a decade and I'm long over due to at least try this PA beer icon.

I also want to educate myself with DMS flavor and make sure I identify it correctly... I was thinking maybe a side-by-side tasting with another AAL (in the name of science of course!). Does anyone have a recommendation to compare Rolling Rock to? [@Peter_Wolfe and/or @hopfenunmaltz, I would really appreciate your thoughts in particular]

Yes, they changed it. You should give up on it and move on to something else. Please.
