Google released their “Year in Searches” today, and a craft brewer cracked the Top 10 most searched beer terms.
The search engine giant logged trillions of searches. In the beer world, spot number one is held by Budweiser. Big beer brands like Corona, Miller and Coors join the list as well. Sierra Nevada, based in both Chico, California and Mills River, North Carolina, occupies the #10 spot.

Keystone is in there because of the pipeline. It has to be.

I think it's high time we start considering removing Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada from the "craft brewery" classification.

Even at about 2.5 million barrels a year, sam adams is still a fraction of the market. Plus, their beer doesn't taste like macro at all IMO.

You can still craft good sh*t in volume. I mean can anyone say anything truly negative about Sierra? To me they've really retained craft spirit/quality, despite the size.

I'm just saying, as they continue to take over the market, the line will finally have to be drawn at some point

If beers like Barrel Aged Narwhal and Utopias don't fit into the craft beer classification... I don't know what will

That really makes me wonder about the general masses. I mean, what would you want to Google Budweiser for? Where it is sold? Maybe to look up those awesome commercials.

How about Goose Island/BCBS? InBev is about as far away from craft as you can get, yet no one seems to care come BCBS release day.

The beer a brewery makes has nothing to do with whether or not they are considered a "craft" brewery. I think it's become nearly unanimous that the Goose Island Bourbon County beers are some of the best craft beer out there, but Goose Island is no longer considered a craft brewery.

I just wish the brewers association would stop changing their limit on barrels produced to stay craft.

The day that Sam Adams and Sierra Nevada lose their "craft" status is the day that the industry would have to report a major drop in "craft" sales... and that would work against the interests of those who make the call.

Brewers association defines "craft beer" as:
Annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less (approximately 3 percent of U.S. annual sales). Beer production is attributed to the rules of alternating proprietorships.
Less than 25 percent of the craft brewery is owned or controlled (or equivalent economic interest) by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer.

Sam Adams website says they make up just under 1% of the market. I didn't look up Sierra Nevada but I'm guessing it's less than that. So, by this definition (which I am not proclaiming is the be all end all,) they are both still craft.

Truly negative? I can't think of anything remotely negative to say about Sierra Nevada.

As craft beer continues to explode in production and popularity, wouldn't it make sense to keep some fluidity in how it's defined?
