Ok first I will say this has probably been posted before. I like to start my own thread so I can have a conversation with my specifics.

That being said do you sometimes feel like a beer that is hyped to be totally great borderline perfect doesn't really live up? I'm drinking my first Heady Topper right now. Maybe I anticipated too much but for being the "best" beer in the world I know i've had a beer last week and the week before and the week before that I just thought was better. I will say that I poured it into a glass and the directions do say drink fromt he can so I will try that since I have 3. Is it just me? I had Jai Alai for the first time last week and I thought it was better. I thought Pliney was better. Unsessionable, Zombie and many Pipeworks Single hop better... It is a very complex beer. I will give it that. I'm not saying at all that it is a bad beer. I think it is actually very good. But best in the world? It's just there for me. And this always boils down to personal opinion but do you guys have similar feelings on not just Heady in particular but highly hyped beers?

I had BCBS last week for the first time in a blind tasting with my cousins and brother which are also very into craft beer. The other two? Off Color Dino Smores and Clown Shoes Very Angry Bastard. Every one of us thought VAB was the best. Although close with BCBS. Dino Smores was just too easy to differentiate.

What are your guys thoughts on highly hyped beers? Am I crazy?

You have to remember that Heady being the best beer in the world is the opinion of the collective called BA. As an individual the chances of your taste and opinion lining up with the collective is nil. No one on this site would have the same top 10 list. Probably not even top 5.

It is nice to use these top lists to give you ideas on what to try. It is a big mistake however to set up in your mind that one beer because it is the top of a list is the best beer in the world.

I do understand that as I stated but I just thought i'd think more of it. And I know I sound like a Midwest fanboy but i'm not. I really wanted Heady to be the best beer I ever had. I tried to get it for a while.

You're not crazy (except about Heady Topper).

I had a 4 pack of Gandhi Bot earlier this year and was underwhelmed. Same thing with Hop, Drop & Roll plus I had that at the brewery (both lacked the flavor I would expect from that high an IBU). I recently had some Wulver and it's not in the same conversation with Backwoods Bastard.

Rarity throws a huge favor factor into a lot of those top rated beers keep in mine

Ok first I will say this has probably been read before. I like to read new threads so I can have a conversation with my specifics.

That being said do you sometimes feel like a topic that is hyped to be totally great borderline perfect doesn't really live up? I'm reading my 100th Heady Topper isnt great thread right now. Maybe I anticipated too much but for being the "best" thread in the world I know i've read a thread last week and the week before and the week before that I just thought was better. I will say that I read it on my tablet and the directions do say read it on a desktop so I will try that since I have 3.<humblebrag> Is it just me? I read "what's your favorite canned ipa from a state with the letter A in the name" for the first time last week and I thought it was better. I thought "Is BCBS too expensive?" was better. "Atlanta Beer Retail", "ISO/FT" and many "Beer Release" threads are better... It is a very complex Thread. I will give it that. I'm not saying at all that it is a bad thread. I think it is actually very good. But best in the world? It's just there for me. And this always boils down to personal opinion but do you guys have similar feelings on not just Heady threads in particular but highly hyped threads?

You're crazy, Clown Shoes never made a Very Angry Bastard.

In all seriousness, of course there will be beers that don't live up to the hype for any given person. For me, Heady--while still excellent--fell short of the lofty expectations I had.

When I first had Lawson's Double Sunshine I thought it totally lived up to the hype I'd been exposed to, but when I woke up the next day I was still a homely introvert who doesn't even lift. WTF.

Founders Breakfast Stout. Decent beer, but I guess I don't get what all the hype and hoopla is about this beer.

I am on the same boat about BCBS. I know it s a great crafted beer but the taste is not for me though I do love Bourbon.

I would not consider Heady Topper complex. Its perfectly balanced simplicity is what makes it so great.

Hopslam, and Ghandi Bot, both are good, but far from mind blowing.

No, I agree in certain ways. I believe, and know it has been said many times on this site and by others, that the rare factor or hype of a beer plays into a lot of peoples ratings. I bet if Heady Topper was readily available to the masses, it's rating on here would not be as high. I have never had it myself, but it is a situation that rings true with any highly hyped beers. It's a situation where when people do finally get their hands on it, they have this grand idea of what it will taste like and they put it on such a pedestal that they rate higher than they would if it was on every shelf.

^And I'm reading my 1,000th "This post again" cry. You could always NOT read it if it bothers you so much.

I actually totally agree here, I just had one of these for the first time and while it isn't bad, I don't get the crazy hype this one gets. Doesn't make sense to me.

My first Heady was just as mind-blowing as I'd hoped. My second was just an excellent DIPA.

Now a beer I was really underwhelmed by...KBS. I finally managed to get two bottles earlier this year, and I was expecting something on-par with, but naturally different than, BCBS. What I got could have been a coffee porter by any middle-of-the-road brewery. It was a good beer, but it certainly wasn't the yin to BCBS' yang like I figured it was going to be.
