if I know lienies had beers like this, I'd probably be a big fan. They should promote these beers more than their shandys. They only release them for a month, and of course, it's not available along the lakeshore http://beerstreetjournal.com/tag/leinenkugels-big-eddy-series/
I know it's not "hip" to like anything with the Leinie label but I think the Big Eddy line is pretty solid. Haven't tried them all, but the ones I've had were quite good. Plus, they're fairly accessible - even for a limited release.
i was seriously hoping that this thread was about chicagoans lining up for things from the big eddy series so i could laugh eternally
I always see the IPA, but never think it's fresh. I enjoy the RIS, not the best available though of course. I've tried the rye wine, and I revisit the wee heavy and will be revisiting the cherry doppleschwarz
I live on the lakeshore between manitowoc and sheboygan and have never heard of this line from them. Everyone's about the shandys around here
It's been maybe a year since I had it once...whenever it first came out. It was a little above average to like B+ barleywine maybe. I don't remember anything too great about it or any specific excellent aspects to it.
Last year one of my locals had the RIS on tap. It was solid and unfortunately (for me) sold out in about a week.
I had the cherry doppleschwarz on tap the other night and it was pretty good. I usually don't pick up a four pack of any of the big eddy line, but I'll usually grab one on tap if it's around.
Solid if unspectacular line. The DIPA is pretty decent...excellent on tap. The RIS is solid and ages very well...I think I still have one of the original '07's down in the cellar. Every time I bring one up, it seems to be doing well, although it's been a couple years now. Only one I didn't care for so far is the Cherry Doppleschwarz. It wasn't bad...just not my cup of tea.
I liked the RIS, but I don't think I've tried any of the other Big Eddy brews. I see them in the store, but for whatever reason I just end up grabbing something else instead. The Cherry Doppleschwarz does sound interesting, I'll have to pick up some of that the next time I see it.
That's what I thought about the Wee Heavy; it was good but there was something off about it, and it was that it was a bit sweet tasting for my liking. It wasn't horrible, but I probably wouldn't revisit anytime soon. I do remember liking the DIPA and RIS. Overall a decent beer line from a brewery you wouldn't expect it from.
I have an abundance of 2011 and 2012 RIS. I'd be happy to clean out my cellar and spread the love around at cost if anyone wants some, just shoot me a BM.
I thought the DIPA and the RIS were good. I know I've had the WeeHeavy too, but it must have been neither too good nor bad since it left no impression.
