My favorite (by far) local brewery, Knee Deep, appears to be getting into the Barrel Aging program. On one hand, I'm stoked to get to try their Imperial Tanilla on Jack Daniels... But on the other hand, I'm more curious than anxious about trying their Hop Deranged on Jack Daniels. They've got a variety of local favorites, and entirely new brews aging in different barrels right now, all with different labels and release dates. I don't think I'm breaking any news with this one (since all the barrels are strategically placed in public walk ways), but I don't think I've seen any other threads on the topic.

I've got to ask the BA community... what are your thoughts on a BA 2x IPA? Anxious? Curious? Neither?

I really liked the Duclaw barrel aged xxserum. Though it was more like a barleywine than an actual dipa.

Putting an IIPA/IPA into a barrel of any sort is a waste of a good barrel. Barrels should be restricted to malty beers which are very complimentary to the flavor. If you put something hoppy into a bourbon/whisky barrel you might as well call it a Boilermaker.

Heavy Seas Big DIPA was pretty good. Nothing spectacular but better than I thought.

With that being said, I don't see the BA IPA trend catching on when you can use that barrel for something more productive.

There are many different things which include alcoholic enjoyment which people enjoy drinking that get put down in a barrel, so.... SURE. Hops have all kinds of different uses, and not all of them need to be where they are used within its (perceived) freshness window.

I've had good luck with the few I've tried (basically, just several vintages of Island Brewing's barrel-aged Big Island). But, I really enjoy the complexity lent by hops in a BA beer (Southern Charred, Bastard in the Rye, and FW XVIII all fit the bill)—not "hoppy" by any means, but just a little bitterness or depth outside the coconut/oak/caramel/butterscotch/etc axis that most BA stouts lie along.

There are barrels other than bourbon/whisky barrels. Read about a Gin barrel aged DIPA somewhere yesterday (can't remember the name) that sounded interesting.

Duclaws BA Serum was not very good. I agree with Mothergoose03 in that unless it is a malt forward beer, don't barrel it.

Same reason why you dont make a smoked IPA. Somethings will just never match...

I dunno- when done right, like with DFH Burton Baton, that subtle bit of wood and aging can produce some fine results. Then again, 'barrel aging' doesn't necessarily have to imply that the barrel had to have bourbon or some other liquor in it previously.

Burton is a blended beer (IPA and Old Ale) according to DFH:

    http://www.dogfish.com/brews-spirits/the-brews/year-round-brews/burton-baton.htm

But I agree it tastes pretty darn good.

I personally have had some decent barrel IPAs and also a few debatable ones, but few have what I consider to be IPA characteristics. Good beers, but maybe not good IPAs.

Done right they are good. They put hopzilla in bourbon barrels and it was immaculate

Well . . . in their defense, they're using Jack barrels. Not like they're wasting the good whiskey barrels . . . :grinning:

Wow maybe because its early but after reading the post when you said BA community I thought barrel aged :grinning:

As for BA IPA's, I'm not a fan. I dont like my IPAs sweet. Also why I don't like them to be very malty.
