I have a very good friend coming over in about a week. He's not a savvy craft beer drinker. He gravitates towards the AAL's but also appreciates a good craft beer. He's enjoyed some pretty good stouts in the past. He's not a big hoppy guy but did like Stone's Collective Distortion. He's had Hardywood's GBS and really enjoyed it. He's commented to me that he really likes a GOOD stout. He also likes a good bourbon.

So, i'm thinking of serving either BBCS (2013 or 2014) - OR - Firestone Walker Parabola (2014 I got this past April).

Just wanted some opinions on what they think would be a good choice to wow him with.

Any reason why you wouldn't do a triangle tasting and hit all 3??? If it was for a good friend that would be an awesome way to try it and advocate for some good barrel aged stouts. As long as he likes bourbon, you can't go wrong with any of these but I'd say try them all and do an informal "ranking". That way, you get to try them all and maybe introduce him to an awesome site like....beeradvocate.com!!

FYI, there are two 13.8% 2014 bottlings, one from October and one from August. The August one is better; it's also better than the 14.4% batch floating around.

If it's the August 2014 Bourbon County that you have (check the bottling date), serve that one. If it's one of the two other 2014 bottling dates, then serve the 2013.

Not enough time for him to drink them all and drive home. If staying the night then I might have considered it.

My 2014 BCBS are the 13.8% versions. So sounds like your vote would be that.

That's a tough choice. I would lean towards parabola and BCBS 14. If you only want to share 1 I would go parabola so he gets a full 11 ounces to make his decision. Also, parabola peas intense so being new to BA stouts that might suit his fancy better.

However, you can't go wrong any. This question is like asking who do you prefer Kate Upton or Olivia Wilde. Al depends on your preference.

My view on this sort of thing is know your audience. If he likes AAL, then consider a good American craft, German, or Czech lager. If you think he will like one of the (world class) stouts you have offer, then present all three, tell him what you think of each one and let him choose. Participation is half the fun in trying new beers.

    Then I'm pretty sure he won't give a sh*t.

It's all world class, and most people in the country don't have those 3 beers in their possession. Just pick one.

I say split the 13 BCBS and if he likes it, pour another one. If he wants to try something different then, open the Parabola.

All the stouts. The answer is always all the stouts.

Honestly, I think Parabola - especially 2014 - might be a bit much for him to appreciate. It might even be off-putting. BCBS is smoother, especially a 2013. If you're looking to ease him into it and see if he likes it, I think that's the way to go.

Now if he likes it, then maybe cracking the Parabola afterwards could be fun...
