The base beer is the recipe from Divine Reserve No. 5, which was listed by Beer Advocate among the Best 25 American Beers of 2007. This is from Ronnie Crocker:

That includes not just the debut beer but also the "killer beer" known as No. 5, a Russian imperial stout from 2007, and the Belgian quadrupel that came out in early 2013 as No. 13.

Moore seemed particularly excited that No. 5 will be re-released later this year as Divine Reserve No. 15 along with a barrel-aged version that will be part of the Bishop's Barrel series.

So BB8=BB5 and DR15 is the base beer for both BB5 & 8?

I would like for them to bring back the weizenbock which I think was the base for BB4 if I'm not mistaken. I liked how the released the base and the Bishop's Barrel. It was nice being able to try both and see how the barrel ageing altered the flavor of the beer.

No it sounds like DR5 = DR15, and that is the base for BB8.

Yeah I misread that. When I saw No. 5, I assumed it was BB5.

Sorry - My source is the brewery. My info is that it will be released before the end of January -- a couple weeks after BB8.

BB8 is a re-brew of Divine Reserve 5, a very popular RIS. Recipe was from famed home brewer, Mike Heniff (beeriac). Aged in woodford barrels. Wait...hasn't SA done BA RIS??? Why yes. Does that make us boring....subjective...especially to this small niche community. I'm excited about it, of course. Base beer is very different from previous BA RIS.

The original plan was to have a different beer for BB8, but that beer was not "great," so it was dumped. So the next beer we had lined up in the barrel was the DR5 in bourbon barrels. Other breweries are lauded for dumping a beer of sub-par qualities, but I'm sure we'll be made fun of. And if it's of any interest, the next 5 Bishop's Barrels are not RIS.

And yes, DR15, the base beer for BB8...originally DR5 will be released two weeks after BB8. Cool experiment to try them side-by-side. You know...for science.

I would love to try this beer, I'm sure it'll be good. I just don't really go to bars anymore so I doubt I'll see it.

I understand. In a perfect world we would sell it onsite to-go, in the liquor store, as well at bars. But, with our footprint, we need to spread it out as best as we can.
