Hi all! New to trading, and was wondering if no extras were agreed upon in the trade, is there a general number or quota that is generally accepted as good practice? I'd like to throw in extras (as Texas has some stuff that doesn't get out of state and I'd love for this person to try), but don't want to go too heavy one way or the other.

    For reference, the trade involves:

Sweet Repute & JK Ambree ---> FW Parabola & DBA

    Cheers!

I think of a few things when I send extras. I look at my partner's wants. How many beers can I safely put in this box or shipper. I look for great locals or something amazing my partner can't get. I also try to rep local breweries.
The key is I want my trading partner to feel like its Christmas morning with the extras and get to enjoy some great new beers.
    Hope this help,
    Tikk

Extras are extras. It's really at your discretion as to how much you send. I usually throw in 3-4 12oz. or a bomber/growler and a couple 12oz. I think you have the right frame of mind in sending locals. It's always fun to try things that I'd otherwise have pretty much no chance of trying.

So basically, as long as there are extras and they aren't super old IPAs they recipient should be happy!

If the agreement was for no extras, I would stick to it. I wouldn't agree to not send extras and then send tons because it would likely just make my trade partner feel bad.

For a typical box where I have an agreed-upon trade, I toss in extras from anywhere from 15%-50% of the box value depending on how much space I have and what I can do to my partner's wants. Generally I throw in good locals.

I'm not 100% clear on OP's post but if both parties agreed to no extras, I agree with the above. While you certainly are making a nice gesture by going ahead and adding extras, I'd refrain from doing so given the agreement. Save 'em for the next trade.

Extra others the way that you would want to be extra'ed

Extra's in a trade should never be agreed upon or even discussed. It's just something everyone should do like tipping at a restaurant. That being said, I also try to extra in the 15-20% value of the entire trade with local fun stuff or wants. Just like tipping. If a discussion was said that no extras were to be sent then this is the only exception.

I agree except as mentioned that if you're sending a six shipper in a 6:6 trade I mention and appreciate the other person saying up front they don't have room for extras. Of course if I'm not using a six shipper in said 6:6 trade even if I know no extras are being sent I send them.

The only etiquette I follow is trying to send more "extras" than my trading partner. My favorite is when they say no extras, I laugh to myself, and send them some anyways!! Like I've said before, what are they going to do, send them back

This is all super helpful information, thanks everyone! To clarify, extras were never formally discussed in the back and forth we've had so far so it seems like a couple local things to round out the box would be perfect. I'm very much on the pay it forward boat, but just wanted to make sure my head was in the right place.

I put my preference on extras, along with a few other things related to trading, in my profile and ask my trade partner to review. I feel this is the only way, through clear communication, to avoid disappointment on either side. I'd always rather agree to "no extras" than be out-extra'ed.

I don't have any set formula for sending extras except one, 'tis better to give than to receive. All of the partners I have traded with have never really discussed extras. That being said, I agree with the statements of @dmbforever and @tikk .
Wants, great locals and space in the box all play a role. I've actually added a box just because there was some extras, I felt, my trading partner had to have. When it comes to beer, Christmas doesn't have to be just one day a year.

If "no extras" was not mentioned, I'd send them.(is a double negative acceptable. Couldn't figure a better way to say it)

Always include extras unless "no extras" was clearly stated/specified.

Ive only sent extras once when there was an 'agreed no extras', and it was because the guy hooked me up in the past.

Just don't send old ass IPA's. Pisses me off when people throw them in so they can free up some space in their fridge.

I'm more confused by the trade. Did you miss out on Parabola and DBA? All 4 of those beers are distro'd in TX.

Confusion aside, unless I don't have room in the box, my goal is to crush the other guy with extras. Sometimes I send extras that are worth more than the trade beers, especially if it's someone I've traded with more than once. Be generous, and it will come back to you.

Actions speak louder than words here. Tikk was one of my first trade partners that blew me away and made me want to be as generous as possible. Cheers to you.
