It's entirely, maybe, possibly, theoretically, perhaps a little bird might have whispered something about some being in whiskey barrels. Or not. I don't really know.

12 ounce bottle poured into a shaker pint
Appearance: nice caramel cloudy color, white, creamy head with lots of tiny bubbles and there is some incredible lacing, each sip creates a ring.
Aroma: there's a smoky peat moss aroma, some roasted aromas, not getting any hops or alcohol on the nose.
Taste: almost like the nose, smoky peat moss flavor, some roasted malt flavors, some hop bitterness a the end, dry roast, smoky finish that lingers.
    Mouthfeel: medium mouthfeel, very creamy.
Overall: not real familiar with Scottish ales, don't really dig the style but I can pick up the quality in the beer, I think it's better than ok, could use a bigger mouthfeel, it has a nice aroma and decent flavor, it's worth a try.

Actually had this yesterday but having some more today

Good Evening NBSers, with a special nod to all you Huggers of Hop Bines

Tonight I’m sipping slowly from an Evolution Brewing Lot No. 3 IPA from Salisbury, MD. Based on this beer I'm pretty sure that I'll be making a point to find and sample several other beers from this brewery since Lot No. 3 has now put Evolution Brewing on my map of breweries to learn more about. Also, with this brewery only about 2 1/2 hours drive down the DelMarVa peninsula from where I live in SE PA I'm going to claim that tonight I'm drinking local.

The weather here today was mostly cool and cloudy with a few light sprinkles while my wife and I went out to do a bit of antiquing. This has been a quiet weekend with nothing exciting to report except the draft of my in-progress review of the Lot No. 3 IPA:

So now that the Eagles have finished their season with a win and the Packers have ensured a spot in coming rounds with today's win, its time for some music to celebrate a victory. This work also includes the number 3 in its name and is one of the most written about, analyzed and reviewed pieces of music ever written. It was truly a game changer that emerged without obvious precedent and the musical world was never the same afterwards. (While there are better performance than the one here, this one gives us a sense of how it might have sounded when first performed.)

The girlfriend and I are finishing the night with 2 Founders beers, one decidedly not new (Backwoods Bastard), and one totally new: Black Rye

For this thread, the feature beer is a "rye bomb". Personally I've not had a beer that has a rye profile like this one. Perhaps the dark malts accentuate the rye more than your standard pale malts do, or maybe it's just me. Looked and smelled great! Taste I waffled on, but it basically portrayed what the label said. If you are a rye fan, I think you must try this. I think I'll definitely give it another go down the road.

Hey Y'all and Happy NBS! I am mostly over the flu and ready to rejoin the land of the living and drinking. And what a beer I have to celebrate with! Dark fruit, sweet chocolate malt, cherries, all kinds of yummy things going on here. And that smell. I feel a bit strange but it does remind me of leather in an odd way. The best feature of this one here is the satiny smooth creamy mouthfeel. Maybe I am just excited to be able to smell and taste things again. I almost feel like I have super powers. Whew!

My new beer comes to me from several time zones away.

Harsher than the winters there, this one tastes like unending arguments and brawls.
The alcohol becomes more apparent with each mouthful. I don't know if this is typical for the brewery but, as a cultural experience it is pretty eye opening.

    NEW AMERICAN IPA

Happy for my Seahawks to pull off the win today!

Feel free to make fun of me for not finding out about this stellar AIPA by Boulevard until now, but this beer is new to me. I just never sprung for it until this past week.

Off to Bayview Pub for dinner where I'll probably spring for a Baranof Silver Bay IPA, guess I gotta drink local, sigh, ssshhh...this Single Wide is so much better.:wink:

Exactly as advertised. Noble hop aroma, totally following through to taste, with minimal malt and nice feel at 7.5%. A little more residual sweetness and a little less carbonation than I'd prefer, but at $2.50/500ml I am not complaining. Cheers NBS!

I love the Eroica symphony; originally dedicated to Napoleon, then famously (albeit perhaps apocryphally) ripped to shreds by Beethoven once Napoleon was declared emperor. I believe it was at the time the longest symphony ever written (later surpassed by Beethoven's 9th and, I'm certain, many others since). It really only hinted at the incredible and unprecedented measures (pun not intended, but accepted) he would take when composing the 9th symphony.

Thanks for that bit of music and memory.

Welcome, and congrats on trying Heady! Here on NBS, we're a little bit different than WBAYDN?: we like to tell each other a bit about the beer we're having. What stands out; what makes it different or special; did it do anything for us; what flavor notes we got from the beer.

It doesn't have to be a formal review (although that is welcome, as well), but a little something about your 1st experience with this brew is considered the cost of admission, as it were (even a brew like Heady; hey, most of us may have had it, but maybe our impression is different than yours, and we're interested to hear so if that's the case).

    Cheers!

This is Day 4 of my 12 Days of Christmas BIF box, courtesy of @I_BYE_MI_BEER.

My first try of Alaskan Smoked Porter, and it's a fresh one. I've actually been sitting on a 2013 a while as I hear it ages very well. Definitely looking forward to the day I open that bottle even more now. Great smoky aroma combined with roasted, almost burnt malts. The flavor matches that smokiness but adds a significant amount of freshly roasted coffee and baker's chocolate. A very nice smooth body, seems a little light for how dark and opaque the color is but as it's really a porter it is spot on for the style.

Didn't have a beer all day until my wife and I went out for dinner a little bit earlier. This was our second trip to the Black Gryphon in Elizabethtown, PA, and I've got to say this may be our new favorite local place. Food is excellent and different, menu's are small and everything is local. Beer selection is great too. Toeny, the chef/main guy, really knows his beer and strives to have good stuff in bottles and on draft.

Tonight I went with a bottle of Two Brothers - Heavier Handed, here is my review:

    4.15/5 rDev +3%
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle in to a snifter glass.

L - Gold/orange and slightly hazy. Short white head after a vigorous pour that was gone quickly, little to no lacing on the glass.

S - Sharp aroma of hops hits you right away....citrus, grass, and pine notes.

T - Hop bite at first, then a strong malt backbone on the finish, very balanced.

F - Hop oils coat the tongue and gives this one a nice body.

O - No bottle on or best by date to be found so I'm not sure of the freshness. Other than that it's a pretty solid brew.

(Sorry about the picture quality, I tend not to use my flash in public as I know it irritates me when other do so)

    Good Evening NBS!!!
Congrats Maria @utopiajane . You contribute so much, and I'm happy to hear you're being recognized for it.

Weather here in So Cal is cold (in SoCal terms). Haha, I know, I know, people in here think below 60 F is cold and the rest of the country thinks, "You have no idea what COLD is." So let's just say, it was a crisp day. And that made for a beautiful sky today.

Started the day with the proper post-Navidad breakfast...red pork tamales with eggs over easy. I love being married into a large, welcoming Mexican family. :grinning: But now it's eveing, so time to pull out a few bottles from the cellar to share with some friends and family coming over to enjoy some tacos de asada and camarones (grilled steak and shrimp) while my daughters play some Christmas songs on the piano for everybody. Great afternoon/evening. One of the bottles I pulled out was this 2013 release I received from some gents in N.C. as a thank you for being their Bruery trustee.

This is a very interesting Old Ale aged in Oak Bourbon barrels with figs and chestnuts.

Pour is active. Burnt copper liquid gleams in the glass. But whoa, quick foaming frothy seafoam head lurches upward. Damn, stop pouring for a second! 2-finger pour brings forth a 4-finger head swirling and angry. Calms down in leass than a minute, and settles in to about a finger high. Nose brings some spicy, slightly saisony yeast qualities coupled with a nutty, Bourbon presence.

Taste is Bourbon (not overwhelming or hot), some spice notes hinting at allspice, cloves, maybe cinnamon. And then there's that yeasty aspect, although the saisony hints take a backseat in the flavor. Interesting. Not bad. Definitely unique. This is a flavor profile that normally can go very wrong for me in so many ways. But, this is still holding my interest. The more I sip, the more it warms, the more I find it, well...interesting. I never get any alcohol heat, yet the Bourbon is a constant. The spice stays there too as it finishes slightly viscous.

Overall, I liked this one, found it to be quite unique. Perhaps even a bit befuddling. Those of you interested in spiced holiday offerings will have a field day with this one.
