So this may sound weak or something but I had Avery's Mephistopheles on Christmas night and ended up puking later on. I tried to space out my sips and loaded up on water throughout the day in anticipation of this beast of a beer. I ended up drinking all 12oz then shortly went to bed. I woke up from my slumber to puke a bit. So what are some tips on enjoying big beers with high abvs without puking?

Drinking one 16% beer shouldn't be making you puke in the middle of the night. Perhaps your allergic to beer.

You know I do get a lot of heart burn. Not necessarily from beer but just in general.

Maybe drinking too much water was a mistake, making you bloated.

Either that or you have as we say in England, 'a kid's belly'.

either you're allergic to something in it, or completely not the problem at all and you ate somthing bad that day. Another possibility is if you do have any sort of acid reflex you shouldnt be drinking alcohol at all :/

Mephistopheles is a big beer and drinking 12 ounces of it should make you at least a bit intoxicated. However, as others have pointed out, you shouldn't be throwing up off of that quantity of alcohol. Have you had problems after drinking in the past? You may have just been sick that day and the beer pushed you over the edge or you may have more serious health problems.

Could have been an anomaly....in all sincerity

other factors at play perhaps...not all connected to the beer

Address it scientifically....try the "experiment" again...see if the reaction is the same....then form a more informed conclusion

    if reaction is the same....condolences

How much do you normally drink? People are saying, "Oh, it's only 16%", but the fact of the matter is that a 12oz bottle of Mephistopheles is equal to 4.8oz of 80 proof booze. Drinking that in short order or on an empty stomach could definitely lead to puking if you don't have a high tolerance.

Go down to the shoppe, get a big batch of fish and chips, eat the greasy food and wipe your hands off on the paper. Then drink the beer. Let me know how that goes. Just kidding. Did you eat anything before you drank? Or with it? Only times I barfed was on an empty stomach and Jack back with my beers. Do I have to count the time beer foamed up out of my stomach and out my nose?

What kind of tasting notes were you getting when the beer was coming back up?

Sounds like too much fluid intake in a shot amount of time. Next time drink that brew with 1 ounce sips over a two hour period. Do eat something about an hour before you imbibe.

I have to agree with CValle. I haven't...er... "puked" over beer in years. And I routinely drink beers weekly that are 7% ABV or higher. Drinking a 10.5% ABV beer now and I feel fine...light headed...but fine.

Go see your doctor. You will get told to stop drinking beer!

I recently went to a strong ale fest. Had the equivalent of 3 bombers in 2 hours. I had a buzz going, but it was gone in an hour or two.
