I'll use pint glasses for anything (food or drink), but the other glasses are beer only for the most part- not because I'm a stickler, but because we have enough that they don't overlap.

Ha! Coincidentally, I was at their house tonight and couldn't resist:

At this point they dig it and don't think twice. The funny thing is, I'm normally just as down with reaching for the solo cup... not sure why I act differently when there... probably because I tend to bring beer there that I've spent good money on. In the case of a relatively famous brewer presenting his signature beer at a tasting... he's got every right to be much pickier than I normally am.
She must be a saint.
How did you know? I need to put a stop to this. I'm in bed at the moment and there's one clear way I can announce that her reign of tyranny is over.

My few beer glasses are really just used for beer. Although I have used a few of my whiskey glasses for beers.

You've just started a new usage. Only a whiskey glass should be used for whiskey barrel aged beer.

Unless you use plastic for your beer it really won't make a difference as long as the glass is cleaned between uses. For the eccentric, get some B-Brite from a homebrew store. It will work wonders, no scrubbing required. Out of curiosity, I had wondered how different liquids might affect how "beer clean" a glass may be. Comparing glassware that has been washed in a basic manner (soap and water), I haven't noticed any difference in the glass that was used for beer vs. the glass used for milk (or anything else for that matter). Both ended up being "beer clean." Neither have I noticed any difference in flavor or appearance. So long story short, no, I do not care what my beer glasses are used for.

Then again... most beer glassware is shaped pretty specifically for beer, so it seldom sees any other uses. I own many pint glasses, which is usually enough to satisfy everyone I know.

i've served wine in my tulips ... i don't have wine glasses and figured they were close

about the only rule i have that i'm hardcore about is no beer glasses in the dishwasher. every dishwasher I've ever used ruins glass, so i'd hop pretty high if somebody loaded one up in there.

but orange juice in my snifter? go ahead ... just don't break it. :stuck_out_tongue:

We're not liquor or wine drinkers in our house. And since I didn't start drinking for a while, all of the "all purpose" glasses are still used for basically anything.

I have a few shakers, a tulip, and a mug. They aren't specifically "beer only," but since they weren't even brought into the house until more recently, it's simply habit to use the other glasses for juice, milk, water, etc. If I had company, ran out of the other glasses, etc, I wouldn't even think twice about using a "beer glass" to put something else in. I really couldn't care less.

I don't have a huge collection of beer glasses, but the ones I do have are for beer only....

If you fill it up with water or juice in between (or after) beers, that's perfectly fine, but they only get used by adults during "drinkin' time".

If a friend feels the need to make a mixed drink in one of them, that's fine also.

There's a cabinet full of regular glasses/cups in the kitchen for everything else, no need to use a beer glass.

I frequently get bummed at my girlfriend for using my favorite glass for OJ... because she's just too damn lazy to clean it.

Some of you guys are insane in the membrane. It's just glass, man! A couple drops of Dawn, a cloth, hot water, and a touch of elbow grease will return your precious glassware to a beer-ready state.

Beer is clean enough...no need for detergents or dish soaps.

Years ago I developed a disease where I purchased a glass at every brewery and brewpub I visited. Never been cured. Then there is the mutated form where I got into drinking Belgians out of the specific glass, so there's at least a hundred of those. What can I say, it's a good life.

I prefer to drink a brewery's beer from their glass, it enhances the experience in a subtle way. Most everything else goes into my Central Waters snifter. I keep a small handful of glassware in the kitchen for most beer consumption, and when I want something else they are in the basement in groovy built-ins that came with our older Cape Cod. No one is going to accidentally grab the special stuff that way, and it keeps the peace over my glass obsession.

No,NO! A glass can feel good. It can have a look that speaks to you personally. It can be etched or have a design that you like, it can feel good or bad in the hand. be easy to hold or difficult. As for the beer glass, the pislner belongs in a tall glass. It's bright clarity, it's perfect amber color and the bubble .. .perfectly formed and crystal clear making their way to the top of that flute to meet a graceful white head. oooh! While a stout belongs in a snifter or goblet. It's darkness abounding along the curves of the sides and bottom of the glass. The alcohol legs impertinently showing as you swirl the beer to refresh the head. The hefe in the hefeweizen glass is the blonde bombshell of beers!

I only use my beer glasses for beer. That being said, if i have a guest in my house and they happen to choose my beer glass for soda, juice, water, etc. i say so be it. I wont make any sort of deal out of it, hell ill even wash it myself. I have a lot of friends that dont appreciate beer like i do, but i dont think that means i should think any less of them, or give them grief for what glass they decide to enjoy their beverage out of. just my opinion.

My first set of pint glasses were for beer only and were dedicated as such until they were deemed the perfect size for splitting "green" drinks between my wife and her friends. Now that pints in general are used for everything from advertising to social commentary, and we have more than the original location could ever hold, they have become the everyday glasses - stacked and nested this way and that. I have stared to rebuild a "beer only" collection that is out out of the way (unless you are going to the "beer only" area of the basement). Only occasionally do I have to rescue my Lagunitas mason pint from the canning supplies cabinet.

I don't get this thread at all. Is there some magical quality to your glassware? Are holy fucking relics? Do you not know how to was glass correctly?

A vessel is a vessel. Why can't I drink rum and coke from a teku? I'm just in it for the shape, who cares what I put in it?

Well of course your right to a point, they can be washed and are easily cleaned, but some of my better beer glasses are expensive, very hard to get, and some are crystal so they're delicate. I can break my stuff, which I hate, but I like it better if someone else doesn't break them for me.
