I just finished reading this book and I thought I would recommend anyone who is interested in what challenges the Italian craft community has faced and will face.

A lot of questions that many of you have asked me are answered especially in regards to pricing. And as well many surprises and history that caught me off guard.

I visited Rome last winter, and really saw no evidence of a craft beer community. Every drink i saw was Peroni, Amstel, and Heineken. I didn't really search for italian craft beer though. Was too busy drinking wine haha.

Can't think of any Italian beer I've ever had.

Oh no! I bet you walked past Bir and Fud or Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fai. Bir e Fud carries only Italian craft while the other carries awesome things from Belgium and the rest of Europe. Next time though look them up!

I was in germany before that experiencing amazing beers. When i got to italy after that, I wasn't even thinking about beer. I know, it's crazy. If I had liked sours back then like i do now, I definitely would have searched for the belgian greats like cantillon, tilquin, and drie fonteinen.

No worries I mean really how many people even I did not know what was going on until only 4 to 5 years ago. Ma Che Siete is one of the places to carry Zwanze on Zwanze day.

Taken from the Birrificio del Ducato website regarding their Beersel Morning:

"After a mechanical breakdown, 3 Fonteinen Brewery of Beersel (possibly the best Lambic blender in the world) had economic damage in the summer of 2009. The news caused such a stir in the International beer movement that I called Armand to know how things were. As he needed to sell his Lambic, I immediately got inspired to blend our New Morning with his beer. We selected three 18 month old Lambic barrels that we siphoned in a small tank on our truck. The journey back was long and hard, myself and Manuel took turns driving through Belgium, France and Italy only stopping for gas. After days hand bottling and months of maturation, the outcome has gone over and beyond our expectations and we can say with pride that it was worth it!"

in 2014, i made a more concerted effort to try some italian craft. i've had a couple of birrificio del ducato, barley, Birra del borgo and LoverBeer offerings. They make some good sours. del ducato nero is a nice chili spiced imperial stout. i usually stear clear or the hoppier stuff because it can be hard to tell how old these are.

I agree. Hoppier stuff is hard to find fresh so I stick to the Verdi Imperial Stout. I got a 16 case for 141.00 here in Wyoming. Not too bad considering..

I have to second Ma Che. That place is amazing with a really nice selection including some crazy whales and a deep lambic cellar. Open Baladin is also a really great bar that has the biggest selection of Italian craft I've ever seen in one place.

I love Italian craft beer and usually try every new offering that is available in my area. Thankfully, there is a great variety of them in the Philly/South Jersey area bottle shops. There's also some cool Italian restaurants that are constantly bringing in ones I've never heard of but as mentioned above, I try to stay away from the hoppier stuff because of freshness issues.

The Italian Craft brands available in the U.S. all tend to retail at the high-end of the spectrum and so for the most part I shy away from them.

On the other hand, when I see my next, big pay rise, I might try them again!

That is why I love this book because it explains why the pricing is so high. Anything from Birrificio Del Ducato is good!

If I see the book I will give it a read. A friend of mine, @BeerBoy used to judge competitions over that way, so no doubt he has tried a few of those Italian Craft beers.

    Cheers!

The stuff I've seen in bottle shops has been pretentiously overpriced. Can't say I'm excited about Italian craft beer scene.

Even for me the pricing is very high but I truly believe in what it has to offer so I make the sacrifice to spend more then I usually do. And how is the pricing in the U.K.?
