When you do it this way, how bulky do you go per bottle? Little enough to still fit 12 bottles in a bomber case?

When I started out sending boxes I made footballs out of every bottle; I've cut that down to 3'/12oz and 6'/22oz bottle but I wonder if I'm still overdoing it.

That is about what fits when I do it this way. Most of the boxes are for 12 bombers, so 6 bombers and a couple smaller ones fit. Make it snug. I use 3 or 4 sheets of bubble per bottle, and then stick as much in any open space I can. Although if I have a shipper I always use that first. Sucks to be my target in anything, it is a rule that you can't send a shipper with an open spot...

I've never been too concerned about breakage, but freezing is a rare issue for me. While it gets cold in NJ, it is pretty rare to have days that don't get out of the mid 20's like the current stretch. My 2 cents on packing is number 1, make sure the box is stuffed, if bottles can't move aroudn at all you really cut down on things that can break. I also try to put a 2 inch buffer on all 4 sides of just packing material (newspaper, bubble wrap, whatever). If you do that, you really cut down on what the bottles can hit to break.

Each sheet is a foot, so you're right about where I am. Most boxes I get have a ton of packing material, and if the bubble wrap is taped it becomes packing material as well instead of being reused, so my boxes are always snug, I just wasn't sure if using a bomber box and standing them up allowed you to go lighter on the wrap.

I follow the same rule with shippers, though lately around these parts the extra slots can end up being root beer as easily as beer.

Good call on the 2" rule, I try to do this but don't always succeed (as @blackcloud will attest to; that box was literally bulging from actual bottles)

... and on another note.. I think this just sucks for everyone shipping beer in general, but shipping is getting way more expensive through both FedEx and UPS

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/ups-and-fedex-raising-rates.242865/

...and I think the only way to get around it is to try and pack more beer into a smaller box, which means less packaging material inside the box, which seems just like a bad idea in general... There's no more of the fit as much beer as possible into an 18x18x16 box... too bad

What a bummer... FedEx charges already put a cramp in how many boxes I send out, and this certainly won't help matters. I wonder how much this is actually reflective of FedEx's costs vs how much it is a cash grab.

I'm going with cash grab. Their fuel prices have been cut by 30-40% yet they jacked up shipping. Now I don't expect gas to stay this cheap forever, but I'd like to at least see some of the places get rid of their fuel surcharge for the time being.

Total cash grab, they want to make it so you send smaller boxes, they can fit more on one truck, less trucks on the road

Re: Shipping, I've gotten to about 3-4 sheets around, and also use an additional sheet each on the top and bottom of the bottle as extra cushion. The first box I sent out to a trade partner (not on here), I only did the "wrapping", had two bottles break (though there wasn't much room to move in that box... I think fedex just played football with it), and the last box I sent out (round 3) had nothing break, though I was also re-using a fortress-esque box that @jdhowe sent me

Not much you can do when they ruin the box. I had one that I really believe they ran over, the box was smashed. No amount of bubble wrap would have helped...

I've seen this equation quoted multiple places and have seen a calculator somewhere or another that uses it, but that's the basic equation. Insulation helps with sender shipping temps as the temp inside the box will be pretty high. By the time it gets to your target the temps in the bottle/box will be much lower and the insulation won't help nearly as much (all insulation really does is slow down the rate of change of temperature). Hoping the warehouse is at least up around 45-50F (which almost all are going to be) is what you're really going for at the target end.
