I don't know if this has ever been done in the past, but given the release of SN's barrel aged Narwhal, I think to this train of thought, I mean I love KBS, I don't care what some people say about it, it's good. But all that aside Founders Impy is by far my favorite, and I always think the only thing I could think of that could make it better, would be to barrel age it. Any thoughts?

A good BA beer is designed differently than a basic Imperial stout. It has more roast to balance the oak/bourbon sweetness. It tends to have less bittering hop, and probably less caramel malt as well.

Maybe the don't have the room for it, Maybe they don't have the supplies for it, maybe they don't feel like it.

There could be so many maybe's, why turn a winter released beer into a special release beer.

Totally agree, I'm saying in addition to FIS, it would be nice to see what it tastes like BA as well

I want to be clear though, I'm not talking about replacing FIS with BBA FIS, I'm saying make a bigger batch and barrel age some of it and then ship it all to me, so I can taste it, because statistically I should sample it at least 100 times.

This has been barrel aged before. They served it at the 2011 Black Party. Quite amazing stuff; not sure why they don't do more of it. It's almost on par with BA Expedition Stout.

    No

One of the most sought-after stouts in Bell's history, Black Note Stout blends the complex aromatics of Expedition Stout with the velvety smooth texture of Double Cream Stout and ages the combination in freshly retired oak bourbon barrels for months. The resulting harmony of flavors captures the finest features of all three components: malty notes of dark chocolate, espresso & dried fruits, all buoyed by the warmth and fragrance of the bourbon barrel. Aimed squarely at the stout and bourbon aficionados, Black Note makes a grand statement about the art of the dark.

Only being kind of snarky, but you know BA has a robust search engine right?

yes yes, I just never usually read the blurbs from the brewery when I search a beer no here, I just remember somebody saying that, obviously they were wrong then. Thanks for the info.

No, there will never be enough!

seriously the only reason I brought this up is cuz FIS is my go to Impy stout, if it's good plain, I think it's gotta be dynamite barrel aged.

I'm glad to see a non barrel aged Imperial Stout. Too many are barrel-aged, IMO. It is also a matter of opinion whether bourbon barrel aging (in particular) helps the beers, I feel it does not, but has become a trend since the GI innovation 20 years ago. To me, there is always a detectable oxidation note in barrel-aged beers, although some people of course like that. Variety is fine, but part of that is retaining the non-wood aged versions which preceded the bourbon barrel era.

Well here's a question what if it wasn't BBA, what if it was RBA or just plain oak aged like Yeti? I have yet to have a RBA beer, but oak aging IMO seems to add definite complexity. I know for some purists' sake they want some things left alone, I just love FIS and would love to know what it tastes like BA'd as well
