The other week I tried my first beer that was aged in a wine barrel.

Other Half In Absentia Luci (10% imperial stout aged in red wine barrels).

While drinking the beer I kept thinking how complex it was. It really evolved a lot as it came to room temperature.

I'd like to hear what styles of beer work well aged in wine (red or white) barrels - stouts, wilds, fruit, etc. that you have tried or hear good things about? Also any examples of somewhat readily available examples I can find on the shelf would be appreciated (especially in New York).

    Cheers.

Does NY get Prairie? Wine Barrel Noir may be worth a shot, even though I didn't care for it.

I know Wicked Weed does alot of sours/fruited brett beers in wine barrels. Mostly white wine barrels.. really, really good sours.

I have a cab barrel aged RIS from Straight to Ale, from Alabama.. pretty tasty.

Sofie is partially aged in white wine barrels. I think it's awesome.

Wine is a pretty diverse brush not unlike beer itself.

Still wine barrel aged brews are still very much in the minority.. as terms of readily avaliable .

French or American oak? What wine varietal was in the barrel? How long aged? What beer style was made in it? There are so many factors....

Hof DorMal has made of recent many varied wine barrel aged brews. Other breweries have also made sporadic one offs such as Mikkeller off the top of my head..
    .

Still it all depends they are out there.

Yeah I was at Wicked Weed last weekend and had two glasses of Genesis which is a sour aged in white wine. It was pretty delicious.

Red Wine Can Can from Westbrook was one of the best beers I had last year. Quad aged 3 years in red wine barrels = amazing!

Whatever the base beer was for Cuvee de Castleton... that.

But I do not like a wine barrel Flanders Red. Don't get me wrong, I like them, I just don't like the idea of 'em (feels like back-dooring it somehow, i.e., where the wood ends and the grape begins, you know?)

Side Project Beers, Cabernet Laika, Perrenial stuff, The wine barrel Black Holes, were all good. Have had many others but these come to the top of mind. Would love to see more.

I think it was De Prouf (spell check) that did a series of various wine and liquor barrels which were nice

From Oxbow 'Stillbow Oxtisanal' (blonde saison aged in blueberry wine barrels) to Allagash Interlude (Belgian strong ale in red wine barrels), I'm feeling the Belgians as base beers.

Wicked Weed was aalready mentioned but they have some EXCELLENT red and white BA stuff. Especially the "Funkatorium" beers. My favorites were Genesis and Amorous, but I can't remember if that's gin aged.

Anchorage ages a bunch of their beers in white wine barrels and all for the better as far as I'm concerned.

Yes Prairie just started showing up in our market about 2 months ago. Picked up a Christmas Bomb just last week actually. I'll keep my eyes open for this one. Thanks.

Allagash Interlude if you want red wine barrels.

Epic Elder Brett is also in wine barrels.

Savant Blanc and I believe Savant Beersel. Also there have been a few one offs if I'm not mistaken

Oh. We do get Perennial here in NY, but I've yet to see either of those. Thanks for the recommendation - love Perennial.
