Yeah, Yeah I know its early....

But checking out the new packaging with the Nooner Pilsner, I couldn't help but notice on the seasonal beers that Flipside Red IPA is now defunct and SN will now offer an Oktoberfest as a fall seasonal. Not only that, but every year it will be a new recipe through a collaboration with a different german brewery.
The 2015 release calendar also confirms this:

Needless to say I am already excited!

yeah i really like this concept for oktoberfest, should be fun. Im sure flipside will end up in a variety pack like ruthless rye did.

In regards to the rest of the calendar.....interested for barrel aged ovila tripel..and of course the new hop hunter should be great.

Ding, ding, ding! Another great example of how SN is working hard to stay "small/craft" vs. Boston Beer Co.

I thought this was about the big party they through, and serve a Maerzen/Oktoberfest as one of the beers. It was darned good (the beer and the party).

I wouldn't be surprised if this release cut into Sam Adams' piece of the seasonal pie in a big way. Hell, that's probably exactly what they're going for.

So many things on that release calendar I'm excited for: India Farmhouse Ale, Hoptinite, Witbier, Baltic Porter and the BA Ovila Tripel. I have faith that SN can do them right.

Nice! Flipside was nothing special to me and I'd much rather have another SN Lager to choose from during the Fall. Another thing to think about is that there will more than likely be a different beer in their Fall mixed pack now to replace the O-fest.

Early? You mean the Fall seasonals aren't out yet?

Last year's Fall Pack O-Fest was outshined by the Vienna Lager but I still liked it just fine. I'm not sure I'd buy a 12 pack or a sixer of it though. That being said, I can't think of a scenario where I wouldn't be eager to try a new Märzen from Sierra Nevada. I'll definitely pick this up.

P.S. I'm also very appreciative of Sierra Nevada's recent increase in the availability and variety of lagers across its line.

I liked this year's SN Oktoberfest beer. Below is something I posted previously:

I had my first beer from the Sierra Nevada Fall Pack: SN Oktoberfest.

I really enjoyed drinking this beer. The strong suit for me was the aroma: bready along with a hop aroma of herbal/spicy with some citrus as well. The flavor pretty much followed the aroma: bready with pleasant hop flavor. It had medium body and a dry finish.

If this beer was available via a 6-pack I would buy more of it.

This is the first time I have tasted a beer brewed with Pacifica hops and I really like what this New Zealand hop offers!

I wouldn’t classify this beer as being a ‘typical’ Oktoberfest beer but my comment to that is: so what? Perhaps I should have used the terminology of “authentic” or “traditional” instead of ‘typical’ but frankly I don’t know what authentic or traditional means wrt the Oktoberfest beer style. The SN Oktoberfest does not taste like the Pale Oktoberfest beers served at the Oktoberfest celebration. SN Oktoberfest also does not taste like the Amber Oktoberfest beers imported to the US from Paulaner, etc. But again, I reply: so what?

A message to @sierranevadabill , please tell the folks at Sierra Nevada Brewery that produced this beer thank you from me. I wish that Sierra Nevada would produce this beer as a stand-alone beer next year; I would buy 6-packs or a case of this beer.

Cheers to Sierra Nevada on this beer!

P.S. Below are details on the SN Oktoberfest beer below:

    Overview

    • Alcohol Content 6.2% by volume
    • Beginning gravity 15.0° plato
    • Ending Gravity 3.5° plato
    • Bitterness Units 34
    Ingredients

    • Yeast Lager yeast
    • Bittering Hops Pacifica
    • Finishing Hops Pacifica
    • Malts Two-row Pale, Pilsner, Caramel, Dark Crystal, Roasted Wheat

    I like the concept.

The recent O fest was satisfactory, but I cannot see myself revisiting it a bunch if they were to put it out again next fall.

But since they are going to be partnering with some German breweries, I will have to try it. As others have said, the Vienna Lager outshined the O fest IMO. So they will get a few bucks more from me by doing this than they otherwise would.

Other than the annoying as fuck enter your birth date shit on their website, these guys can do no wrong in my book.

Not sure I see any great appeal. I am a sucker for Oktoberfests, but if Sierra Nevada partnered with (let's say) Paulaner, I wouldn't expect the result to be more appealing than the great Paulaner Oktoberfest that it would be competing against for space in my fridge. There is no shortage of these beers in the fall... from the US or (thankfully) Germany. If the beer proved to be fantastic, it's still just a one off. That being said, I welcome the approach and would be likely to buy a single.

It's all up to what you value (thanks, George Harrison). If I can get fresh domestic O-Fests like Great Lakes and/or Sierra Nevada in less than 5-10 miles from my house then I have absolutely no interest in seeking out any imports.

Except for that month on the water with no refrigeration your getting in that Paulaner.

Issues with freshness and travel are a given. All things considered, I still prefer the imports in the case of Oktoberfests (perhaps the fact that I'm in NY helps). My feelings here are specific to this style of beer. If Sierra announced that they were going to do the same thing with an annual kolsch collaboration with rotating Köln breweries, I'd be very excited. That would be a very welcome sight in our marketplace. (At least to me if not many.)
