Had a blind tasting with some friends yesterday. I knew which beer was which but no one else did.

The four beers were: Heady Topper, Pliny the Elder, Double Jack, Dirtwolf

    The results (not including me):
    (1) Double Jack (unanimous)
    (2) Dirt Wolf
    (3) Pliny
    (4) Heady (3 of 4 tasters put Heady as 4 of 4 and the 4th taster had it at 3rd)

I thought it was an interesting outcome so I figured I would share.

As I said, my opinion was not reflected in the results...and I don't think that is accurate.

Thats interesting and this hypothetical. But if I had Pliney and did that test I am quite sure the results would have been the reverse order. I prefer less malty DIPAs. Although I like most and can appreciate a well balanced one.
To each his/ her own. Cheers!

Yeah, usually I enjoy the hoppier IPAs/DIPAs and would have predicted my results to be 1. pliney 2. dirtwolf 3. dbl jack 4. heady but i actually ranked them 1. dbl jack 2. pte 3. dirtwolf 4. heady

maybe it was just an extra delicious bottle of dbl jack

In what order did you taste the beers? I am also curious how you cleansed your palate.

Have had both Hop Ranch in bottles and as a growler fill it was great both ways. I'm not a Heady fan myself so my choice would have been Pliny, Dirt Wolf, Heady, Double Jack. I would say Hop Ranch beats all 4.

Definitely agree with that ...there is just the faintest hint of malt in Hop Ranch.

Fresh Double Jack is amazing, trouble is the fresh part. I've never done a blind I'd love to do so, but the fresh part is the bitch to make it fair.

I did a 16-DIPA blind tasting that an awesome bar, CJ's Dogshouse, put on, and Heavy Seas Loose Canon won against many beers that are rated much higher and I personally enjoy more on an individual basis, but multiple DIPAs are very hard to judge against each other because of the bitterness on the palate and the nature of hop subtleties, so stylistic changes, such as well-malted and heavily dry hopped varieties will stand out and be appreciated more.

Of those 4, Pliny is my favorite, but part of what I love is how balanced it is with so many strong flavors present, but that trait is almost immediately disregarded in a multiple IPA tasting.

I really don't think Hop Ranch is all that to be honest, from Victorys stable I think Dirt Wolf is more enjoyable.

I would like to know the ages. I had two week old Pliny recently and it was phenomenal. And with heady, I think you freshness is key. Week old stuff in my fridge and it was a different beer from the 3 month old can I had in the summer.

My preference is the reverse of that. No dis on any of them though, much love for double jack (even more for wookey)
