Whenever I am in MA I drink as much Jack's Abby as I can. They have it down to a science. I have yet to have an IPL I prefer more than Mass Rising. I was fortunate enough to get to the brewery last month and I had TrIPL, which is a triple IPL and it was absolutely incredible.

I'll pile on with the Jack's Abby love. Mass Rising and Hoponius Union both have excellent juicy, citrus flavor, without the bitterness that sometime accompanies hoppy beers. They make for amazing session beers, and, in my experience, are also perfect "gateway drug" beers to use to hook your friends on craft beer.

You guys beat me to it. I'd be excited to see American brewers produce better traditional lagers first. However, I do think producing "hoppy lagers" would be a way to catch the eye of many beer enthusiasts, being that so many seem to enjoy hoppy beers period. I'd give any new effort a shot.

Agree completely with this comment. These Dissenter and IPL were the 2 on my mind.

I give any brewery extra points for brewing a hoppy lager and take them away if they call it an IPL

Chiming in to agree, Jack's Abby absolutely crushes it every time with hoppy lagers.

oh for crying out loud. What next, hoppy gruits? Seriously, STOP IT with the excessive hopping! You're turning everything into the equivalent of a macro lager - macro hop bomb!

Does anyone suspect Jinx Proof has been reformulated, and its now less hopy?

I'd probably have a few, but I wouldn't want people to go around messing with certain styles and creating double imperial hoppy Maibocks or other beers like that.

I think slightly increased hoppiness in beers that already 'feature' (to more or less of a degree) hops would be okay, especially pilsners. I think the success of American spins on German and Czech pilsners show hoppy lagers done right- they showcase hops but also allow some of the subtleties to still come through. Make a beer too big, and what's the difference between a hoppy ale and a hoppy lager when it's just all hops?

I love a good hoppy pilsner, the OP's suggestions and Lagunitas Pils are very enjoyable when I'm in the mood for something "light." I would love an opportunity to try a Firestone Pivo Pils, as I love every beer I have had the opportunity to try from them.

That said, I'm not a fan of the IPL style. At least not the few examples I've had. I'm not yet ready to write off the whole style yet, and would be happy to try the offerings from Jack's Abby.

The Bruery's Humulus Lager: I think this brew is worth it's praise. I've had it twice on tap and each time it's amazing. So what if they use Rice, that brew is all about the hops! I'd definitely drink more Hoppy Lagers.

More lagers, yes, more pilsners, yes. Hoppy, no. Remember sundried tomatoes in everything in the 90's? And pumpkin spice in gottdam everything last fall? Lets not do that to hops.

I didn't know you were anointed beer czar. Sales will determine if they are popular enough for more to be made. I say bring them on.
