How often do you drink shelf beer?

Where I live at in MD, all I can ever get is shelf beer...

 

80% homebrew
18% shelf beer
2% whalez and I mean real whalez, not the swill that passes for whalez these days.

 

Lets be honest, all we ever drink is shelf beer. Anything not considered shelf beer gets purchased and stored in a closet for several years.

 

What? Shelf beer? As soon as a beer hits the shelf I can't drink it. Whalez only Bruh!
but seriously probably about 70% of what I drink is shelf beer. I can't afford to only drink whales.

 

I voted 100% in the poll because every beer I've ever bought was once on a shelf.

 

Problem is that even every day shelf beer can run $12 a four pack.

 

The majority of my beer consumption is at home. Aside from that it's maybe three fests or events outside of the house. Maybe a few times at a bar. I don't trade. I own a kegorator.

 

With my drinking habits and salary what they are, I'm forced to be frugal. I chose 80-100% of the time.

I focus on purchasing 6-pack and 4-pack classic favorites (Deschutes, Stone, Sierra Nevada, Firestone, and others), sometimes pick up a 12-pack or mixed packs. I also branch out and get 6-packs and 4-packs of breweries/beers I haven't tried before, to see if I can find something I like enough to keep in regular rotation. I'll buy one 22-oz of special release beers and I think twice about anything above $10/22 oz. I rarely drink beer at bars, pubs, restaurants, etc. because of the mark-up in prices. It's helped me to keep the tab down to a reasonable amount per month (which I try to determine based on income and other expenses). If I made more money, I'd probably go to more bars to try new stuff and buy more expensive beers.

 

Ill buy a 4 or 6 pack.. even a single of some awesome stuff.. then every time i drink ill have one GREAT beer .. then about 5-6 shelf brews..

 

I have a bunch of what I consider whales in my pantry now. Ten Fidy, Abraxas, Xocoveza, BCBS, Christmas Bomb, and Saison Brett. Most of what I drink is shelf beer. I've found a few really good (to me) ones that I keep in rotation.

Homebrew as a shelf beer brings my total to 99.9%. I occasionally get a small pour of something else at a festival or s friends event.

Ok after more thought I need a ruling. I did get a case at the alchemist truck sale because I was near. I guess that is not a shelf beer. In that case then my year would drop to 90 to 95%.

I prefer good beer vs great beer.

Then I would guess 50/50.

 

Ten Fidy is a whale? Hell there's 5 cases still right up the road for me to pick up.

 

I have well over 100 bottles in my "cellar" and that's pretty much all I drink at home. Are they whalez? Depends on your situation, I guess. I drink at home 4 or 5 days a week and some of that is my own homebrew.

I only drink "shelf beer" when I go out for draft beer, and that's usually three or four times a month. And a lot of that is one-offs or limited/seasonal releases...

I picked 20 to 40% in this poll.

 

I found it for the first time here in St. Louis right before the holidays. I'm not sure if they are going to keep Oskar Blues stocked in the future. It may not be a whale, but I was excited to find it here in the midwest.

I said 80-100%, but if easily available seasonals or one offs (Ten Fidy, Xocoveza, and Saison Brett are all sitting on shelves where I shop regularly) are whales, it is probably 25% shelf and 75% whales. I drink a lot of seasonals.

 

OK i changed my vote from 60-80 to 80-100 ... Looking at horsehockeys thread.. some of the ones i consider whales .. Ten Fidy, Abraxas, Xocoveza, BCBS, Christmas Bomb, and Saison Brett apparently are not but hey those are top notch to my wallet.. So a TRUE whale.. I dont drink hardly ever..

 

is Rochefort 10 a "shelf beer" *and* a "normal, everyday beer"?

I drink 80% at home, almost all of it in cans or bottles. I'm going to use my growler more in 2015, but I'll still drink at least 70-75% from store-bought cans/bottles.
