It looks like this years's Blackbeerd is currently resting in Willett Rye barrels and will be released in March, per the Charleston City Paper.....
"Since that first release, Blackbeerd has made it into barrels every year except 2014, when COAST was undergoing an expansion. Jack Daniels was followed by Buffalo Trace barrels, then a blend from Buffalo Trace and second-used Jack Daniels barrels, then two years of Blanton's barrels. 2013 saw the longest aging of Blackbeerd, which spent 11 months in second-use Blanton's barrels. Chalk up another win for COAST's experiments.
This year, the entire batch of Blackbeerd is aging in 20 Willett Rye barrels, save a handful of casks that have been, or will be, popping up around town. This is by far the largest barreling COAST has done, and it's the first time Blackbeerd has touched staves that did not hold bourbon. While the scale is bigger, the sense of newness has not left the operation. It seems like only yesterday they were hand-waxing bottles of Barrel-Aged Blackbeerd.

Keep an eye out for that newest experiment in March, assuming it tastes as good as it sounds."

Didn't feel like being the sober asshole to point out the JD != bourbon thing, but I will be a non sober pendant. Pure JD is first. Pure Willett is 2nd.

I'm stoked for this. It takes me back to the initial blackbeerd release party where a jolly Les topped of my half pint (of what he didn't realize) of rye knot with blackbeerd. Sadly both beers seem to be drier these days (or I'm going senile), but I do love rye.

Appreciate the implication that I'm an asshole. Im sure I am not the only that gets annoyed when people refer to JD as bourbon. Since you tried to correct me, the quote was this was the first time that Blackbeerd touched staves that didnt contain bourbon. Even though the third batch was a blend of Buffalo Trace and JD barrels, it still was in non-bourbon Barrels, so yes this is indeed the 3rd time that Blackbeerd has touched staves that didnt contain bourbon. Nitpicky, sure I'll give you that, but Im no asshole sir.

Consistently one of my favorite releases every year. The base beer pairs remarkably well with bourbon (read Whiskey in all its varieties used to date) barrels. Something about the straight forward, roast heavy, not-fluffed-with-a-dozen-additives-but-still-so-god-damn-good-base-beer, that enables both the base beer characters and the barrel characters to shine. Not everything has to have chocolate, chilies, cherries, coconut, vanilla beans, scorpions and whatever else brewers throw into beers these days, and then quadruple barrel aged in a multitude of exotic spirit barrels to be an amazing beer. Sometimes simplicity is best.

2012 BA Blackbeerd is one of my favorite beers ever, and actually was a big reason I started getting into bourbon/whiskey. Definitely looking forward to this one, hope they give it plenty of time in the barrels, no need to rush! If the quoted release date is accurate, and if my memory of when the barrels showed up at the brewery is accurate, I think that would mean approximately 6 months in barrels.

Thanks @zac16125 you have no idea how much we appreciate that! That's exactly how we've always wanted Blackbeerd to be, straightforward and just really damn good.
Aside from the Scorpion pepper and dark chocolate cask at Brewvival

Does Blackbeerd sell out quickly usually? Will it be on tap at the brewery? I'm planning a trip to Charleston in April (for our 5 year anniversary) and I'm hoping to get to try this. I have a bottle of Old Nuptials that I'm planning on opening to celebrate as well.

I was talking about actual scorpions, not scorpion peppers. Step up your game and go with the real thing!

    These guys did it:

Still the dumbest thing I have ever seen done with beer.

In years past, yes it sells out pretty quickly. However, this is the largest batch yet so I anticipate it being around a bit longer.

I'll second this. I've never had the chance to visit the brewery but was lucky enough to get a 4 year vertical in a trade and just drank them all earlier this month (2010 - 2013) and they were all excellent. 2011 had a little oxidation - rusty under the cap - which made it the least compelling (sort of a powdery finish and, if I recall, more of a cocoa type of chocolate flavor) but even that was still very good. 2012 and 2013 were my favorites so I seem to favor the Blanton's with the spicier / tobacco notes and that fudgey chocolate. I hope to get to try the 2014.

One other thing I'll add here is that beyond adding a bunch of adjuncts, another stout trend that irks me is amping up the alcohol and residual sweetness to undrinkable levels. It's a parlor trick way of producing an "impressive" beer that works well in a tasting - here's your 2 ounce dose - but is thoroughly unenjoyable in a real serving size. The body and richness on this in a drinkable package is what I love. Under 10% and well attenuated but still maintaining a creamy - not viscous / motor oil - body.

Woo Hoo! That's great news! I've missed this for the last few years and it's totally on my radar this year!!! Now if they could just return Hopart to its former glory....
