I havent had a single beer in January. Promised myself I'd go a month without a beer to kickstart some weight loss.

But cheers to all those drinking great new beers today, cant wait for Feb 1 for my first St. Lam

As my Grandfather used to say, "you're only late if you don't show up." I don't know how I got so busy on such a lazy day.

Overcast skies and temps in the 30's are leading to a slight thaw in West MI.

Watched some soccer this AM, cheering on my real-life favorite at the expense of my fantasy picks. A few house chores and a lot of time with the family today.

A very solid offering from Brewery Vivant today (figured I should get off the Short's theme, though a year of Short's reviews sounds like the next undertaking). Pretty true to the style, while amping everything up a notch with a substantial malt bill/ABV.

I liked this brew a lot, it's nice and refreshing, even on a day in Ohio when it's around 30 degrees. Guess it's time for me to watch Finding Bigfoot or whatever else is on TV now. Cheers again and happy NBS everyone!

    Here's hoping it goes well!

I did the same thing last year (in March), and it did work for me. I was thinking of doing it again, actually- but not until after the Superbowl . These Sundays are big-calorie days for me, but as I get on in years I find it's best to do a little compensation afterwards.

Finally getting around to having a beer for NBS so I figured I'd make it count:

    Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout.

There's a reason this beer is rated 100 on BA, it's excellent. Bourbon flavor shines though at first but then the coffee takes over as the real star, little to no alcohol burn makes this not just a great flavored beer but super balanced and I think that is what makes it excellent.

Glad I stumbled on a bottle of this as I've never seen it in previous years.

Next week it's finally time for the NBS BIF to start and I'm eager to tear into one of the 7 Michigan beers that @superspak was nice enough to send me. Also pumped for the box I sent to @BigRedDog to arrive tomorrow, trust me man I think you will be very happy with the box of awesomeness I sent you my man!

    For your listening pleasure:

    Cheers!

Picked up a 6er of this after work today. This usually isn't something is go for but I have never had one of SN's beer camp beers.
It has a nice light body with a bready taste that's backed with a hop flavor. This beer kind of reminds of Stone Go To IPA in the fact that the hops are only there for little bit and not that strong. Overall a decent beer but is probably want pick it up again.

Ha, me too. I find it works for me not drink anything during the week. That always seems like a nice break, although I know it's not what the docs recommend.

Howdy NBS. Hope everyone is having a good weekend. As many already know the NBS BIF mostly wrapped up the shipping last week. I received a box from @ZebraCakez with a ton of beer, so I am going to try quite a few today. All are beers I cannot buy locally.

A nice milk stout. Nice appearance, head stuck around and left some nice webby lacing down as you drink it. The aromas were huge with coffee and dark chocolate notes with some toast and light charred notes as well. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, cream, and light char. Light amount of roasted bitterness on the finish. Good balance of the bitterness/sweetness of roasted malt flavors. Robustness of flavor was lacking, but still tasty in malt profile. Very smooth and fairly creamy finish. The is a fair amount of dryness on the finish as well. Overall nice and enjoyable, could have used a bit more robust flavor and body for a sweet stout. This seems to be more in the realm of a dry stout in character. 3.68

This is a damn good pale lager. Nice aromas with bright grapefruit, lemon zest, and orange peel with some light-moderate pale malt and herbal/grassy hop earthiness. Taste of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, cracker, bread, light pine, and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. A light herbal/grassy bitterness is present on the finish. Nice bright hop flavors and light-moderate pale malt balance, never really feels watery either. A really good amount of dryness is present on the finish. Very smooth and crisp finish with a bit of breadiness in the mouthfeel from the munich malt. Unbelievably clean lagering, absolutely zero yeast earthiness. So delicious and clean with nice hop flavors. No complaints at all. 4

Very nice red ale. Really nice aromas with bright and juicy citrus/tropical hop notes with moderate caramel, toast, and light toffee malt sweetness. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, and pine with moderate malt sweetness of caramel, toast, brown sugar, and light toffee. Light-moderate amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish. Some really nice juicy hop and malt complexity all around; well balanced bitterness and malt sweetness. Very smooth and fairly creamy mouthfeel with some light hop stickiness. Really tasty stuff, they did well in balancing the hop and malt flavors while still keeping the bitterness tame. 3.9

Figured I should hit the IPA first of the Buzzards Bombers. Very nice IPA, very east coast style going on of course. Nice and pleasant aromas consisting of nice citrus and pine with some light caramel and toasted bread malt presence with a nice herbal/grassy earthy hop character as well. Taste of grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light caramel, toasted bread, anbd herbal/grassy hop earthiness. Good amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish. Some nice hop complexity consisting of citrus and earthy herbal qualities with moderate malt presence. Nicely balanced malt and bitterness. Fairly crisp and sticky mouthfeel and finish. Very enjoyable IPA. Spot on to the east coast style. 3.9

Orange honey in color, frothy head that trails back to a thin
Hoppy nose piney, a bit “dry” .
Taste is pine meets hints of floral, maybe some lite citrus.
Malt backbone is fairly prominent for an IPA. But I like it.

This really does taste like oatmeal raisin cookies with some added bourbon but not getting any of the chiles. Good but not as good as track #10-Bat Out of Hell (the only other box set beer I've had)

    And we're back.
So much OHIO in the house tonight, courtesy of Beer Ambassador NBS BIF #1 @WesMantooth

Next up is Christian Morelein's OTR (Over the Rhine)
It's described as an APA, but comes off as more of an Amber Ale to me. Sweet at first, hops only give it a crispness on the end. Not bad, quite "sessionable" but not your typical APA in the hop area.
Glad I got to try it.

This is a good but not particularly memorable barleywine. The label art is pretty great, however. A dog in a sombrero with a pair of six-shooters surrounded by dead chickens. Why not? That and I've never had a beer from New Mexico before.

I still have no ability to process what I watched today. Out of control. I don't think I've gone through such extreme emotional changes all in a three hour window since 'the' big breakup many many years ago. Go Hawks!

I've really tried two new beers today. Dark Star from Fremont and De La Brett from Urban Family Brewing Company.
I went for Dark Star because Fremont is amazing, and it's Seattle, and I was celebrating the Seahawks. I'd had the bourbon version (KDS), but I'd never had the base beer before. Good stuff. One of my favourite oatmeal stouts. Thick and a touch oily and smoothe and flavourful. Yum!
I opted for De La Brett for a couple of reasons. I had picked it up because it was the first time I"d seen something from a very small local brewery, and I wanted to explore some local offerings. I chose to do it today because I could connect it to the days' activities through only a couple of steps. Seattle brewery. urban FAMILY brewing (my brother is in town). de la BRETT (Packers... Brett Favre...). It was decent. Solid, not spectacular type. Definitely get the brett, some butter, and some grassy and floral hops. A little blunt and subdued towards the end. Cool.

My brother (the one from the Christmas post) and I are going to head out to the peninsula for a couple of days. Hoh rainforest ftw. Hopefully I'll have some great pictures for you all next week (along with some fantastic brews from the east coast care of Mr. @Roguer. Thanks big homie!)
