Curious on everyone's thoughts regarding binge drinking. At times, it feels like its a big elephant in the beer world's room. Does anyone have a set of specific guidelines they follow when drinking?

I'm getting old. One rule that my body has taught me is to not drink after 10pm.

Agreed but everyone's definition of "moderation" differs depending on who you're talking to.

Yes. I only drink on days that end with a "y".

    I don't think 1 or 2 12oz beers 3 or 4 nights a week is that big of a deal.

    Maybe that's just me though

For me, I do not like getting anything past a nice buzz. I never drink to get drunk.

I have pretty well perfected how to drink several 12 0z beers and a bomber without getting
more than a buzz. Of course this is all sensitive to the period of time you will be consuming alcohol.
I mostly drink between the hours of 3 pm --10 pm (weekends) and 6 pm-9 pm weekdays.

Because i am an early riser, and i absolutely hate hangovers, i drink minimum 16 oz of water between beers. This keeps me hydrated, level headed and not drunk...

I dont think i really answered the OPies question. Just sharing how i do things.

Good luck, I am sure many users use this site to help justify their own problem drinking.

I've said it before "I can't be a drunk honey, you should see how much those guys on beer advocate drink!!!"

Not trying to justify anything here. I acknowledge I drink way too much. Just curious to get other people's perspectives.

Depends on where your feet are planted, In Ireland I would be considered a lightweight. In America I would be considered a raging alcoholic by some for drinking a few beers a few days per week. As Long as beer doesn't become a primary concern and doesn't effect health or relationships it is tough to call it anything other than an enjoyable way to spend an evening. One must be careful though it can get out of hand pretty quickly and without much warning.

Alcoholism: you can't function normally without a drink
binge drinking: consuming more than 4 alcoholic drinks (12oz of 5% beer) per hour
Don't do the above and you're fine

I pretty much drink a beer every night with diner; maybe a couple on the weekends, and have never really considered it a problem.

Uh who thinks a few beers a week is raging alcoholism? That's new to me. I don't know anyone with that view, even people who don't drink.

I just saw a tv show where a woman in 60's said she drinks 2L of beer per day for as long as she can remember.

I love beer, and drink it every night. However, I drink 1-2 'good' beers. Pounding 6 Miller Lites every night just to get hammered, is pretty stupid if you ask me.

I'm trying to get my annual average consumption under 2 beers per day. Not drinks - beers. I don't nitpick too much over alcohol and I've probably let a few slip by without marking them on Untappd, but in general when I compare number of days with number of beers I'm getting closer to achieving my goal. One strong day of drinking can really screw up my average, so it does cause me to consider whether or not I should continue drinking once I've reached about 3 beers.

I also have a two-year old and another on the way. Drinking around him is difficult enough, and then I'm exhausted about an hour after he goes to bed, so I really don't have enough time to drink a lot.

I'm in the same boat. But there are those nights when you go out to a tap takeover or youre just trying new beers and next you thing you know you're 5, 6, 7 in. LOL

A wise man I know once said, "age has a way of taking care of certain sins". At my age (54) binge drinking is not an option. I've got enough aches and pains without adding more woes in the form of a hangover, which I used to get very easily. One beer a night does it for me. I no longer look at beer as an alcohol delivery system, but rather something to be enjoyed, savored, and appreciated for what it is, not what mass consumption can do.

My son once told me I had a drinking problem. My daughter corrected him and told him I didn't have a drinking problem, I have a buying problem.:slight_frown:

Given how alcohol has been routinely reviled in America throughout it's comparatively short history (compared to say anywhere in Europe), the physical and social definitions of "alcohol abuse" are likely wildly different. Whether it's a modern day temperance fellow or an evangelical, there will always be people behind "scientific studies" that indicate 2-3 beers a decade (exaggeration...) being a problem. Likewise, there will be proponents that swear that a 5 cocktail lunch and six at dinner mean nothing (again, exaggeration...). Personally I won't listen to either. I let my body tell me what is excessive or tolerable, at least I have in the past. Based on what my body indicates, I can have one or two moderate ABV beers a night, if I wish, with no ill effects on my sleep cycle or morning status. This is a much better road than what I was on when I was younger, as I drank like a mad person for a good chunk of my twenties. Than again, my body told me to stop or die. Just that simple. So long story short? Moderation and know thy self. Lest not those who judge be judged, eh?

FWIW, I'd love to hear what the social view on drinking currently is in Germany, UK, etc.,. We've all heard stories about 2 year olds drinking in Europe and it's fine, or sessioning at lunch every day, but the EU has been going through it's own progressive movement that could have very well changed the mores on alcohol consumption.
