for binge, isn't it 5 drink units in 2 hours?
    http://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/fact-sheets/binge-drinking.htm

A 16 oz pint of 7% IPA is about 1.8 drink units. So, 3 pints of IPA at the pub in 2 hours is over the limit.
A 12 oz bottle of 7% IPA is about 1.3 drink units. So, around 4 bottles of IPA in 2 hours is over.

It's only binge drinking when beerbongs, kegstands and Jello shots become involved.

When doing some above average beer drinking, keep the shots and hard booze out of the equasion.

I had that thought the other day when I saw someone post a picture of a 10%+ bomber that he had opened while waiting to take a family member on a presumably long drive. I don't know if he shared it with someone so I am omitting most of the details, but from the information presented in the post I was a bit surprised.

Wow that's different from what I learned in health class a few years ago lol. 5 "drink units" in 2 hours seems quite strict

Those are pretty "USA-wide." Look who is making those recommendations. Follow the money. Now if Jack Daniels were making the recommendations, I bet the guidelines would be very different.

By my standards, binge drinking is something that happens very infrequently these days.

By cdc standards it sounds like it happens fairly often......

I used to drink 9 beers of Sierra at a time in my yonger days. Now I feel like crap if I drink more than two Pliny in an evening. Hangovers is one reason I am so into craft beer. I can get one or two high alochol beers that taste incredible sip them over the course of a few hours and feel fine the next morning. When you pay over $10 a bottle for something you are not going to chug it and move on to the next one.

The CDC considers "Moderate drinking" up to two beers per day for men. Three or four per day is considered excessive.

There seems to be some confusion between heavy drinking and binge drinking.
A heavy drinker is, surprisingly enough, one who imbibes a lot of alcohol during the week. The guys I mentioned in my previous post drink several Imperial pints every lunchtime and every evening. That isn't binge drinking. They don't drink to get drunk or even a buzz. They remain functional and rational. But they do drink several times the recommended guidelines for alcohol consumption. They are not binge drinkers.
Binge drinking is drinking large amounts for the sake of doing so.For the buzz and getting drunk.

From what I understand Binge drinking is consuming alcohol as rapidly as possible and with the sole intention of getting drunk. I have seen some numbers posted here for what constituted binge drinking but it will vary from person to person based on factors like weight and tolerance.

There is a big difference between drinking 4 or 5 big beers over the course of an evening and ending up drunk compared to chugging the same amount in an hour or two.

It's only binge drinking if you don't do it everyday.

I drink daily but I still cut it at the point of a good buzz on work nights. If I have the next day off I will usually have a couple extra but getting shit faced Is not much fun anymore.

In my short stint as a BA member, I've posted two pics in the "latest haul" thread–one in late November, one a few days ago–but if you went down to my basement right now, you'd see most of those beers still down there, either boxed up (a.k.a. "being cellared") or gathering a fine layer of dust while awaiting an occasion to be opened. My problem tends to be that I'm more of a collector than a drinker.

My intake used to be comprised of a couple bourbons, 2-3 beers, or a generous cocktail 3-4 nights per week, plus 1 night per week of what would definitely fall under the "binge drinking" category (usually mixed drinks at a corner bar, or cocktails at a craft cocktail bar). It was unhealthy, expensive, and painful the next day.

Since getting into good beer, I'm drinking less than I ever did before...now I have 6-12oz of beer 2-3 nights per week, plus 1-2 nights per month were I'll go out and have 2-3 beers (4-12oz pours each, depending what I order). With better beers, my imbibing slowwwwws down, because my focus is on the flavor & the experience, not on pounding it as quickly as possible...when my wife & I split a BCBS bottle, I find it takes me about an hour to finish my 6oz. And now that every corner pub & sports bar is serving craft beer, I've found that I can order some very decent sippin' beers just about everywhere I go.

Well, one other caveat: I have young kids, so I generally don't have the energy to stay up too much later than their bedtime, and don't have the freedom to nurse a hungover the next day, so when I do have a beer, it's during dinner & while they're putzing around after dinner. I'm hoping this has the added bonus of teaching them that beer is a delicious beverage that you savor responsibly in moderation. Hopefully that lesson will serve as a contrast to the chugging/shotgunning/bonging/keg-stand/"Edward 40-hands" stuff they'll no doubt see in college.

Or heavy beer drinkers on beer forums :slight_frown:

A couple DIPA pints, couple regular IPA pints, 2 hours... nah, can't be a binge.

Hate hangovers, 1-3 beers in day is plenty for me. Quality over quantity.

I think this is about right and, as others have said 1) I'm too old to drink much more and 2) I can't really appreciate beer much after about two beers unless I really pace myself. I would rather enjoy my beer and feel good the next day.

A 19.2 oz imperial pint of 3.2% mild is about 1.0 drink units. So, around 5 imperial pints of mild in 2 hours is over.
