I attended an event tonight which included a tapping of Hi-Res, which I know is marketed as a "triple IPA". PTY is also labeled a triple IPA. I was just curious if any other breweries out there have brews that fall into this catagory. What do you all think of the "triple IPA" concept? Is this something that will become more common and become an actual style?

    Cheers!

10.5% + is usually labeled as a triple.

Ive had quite a few of these and some are way too sweet, and some are the best beers I've ever had. Out here, there's whole events dedicated to them.

    Examples:

http://www.wahopmob.com (This one has 30 Washington State breweries all making triple IPAs).

Molotov Cocktail is always fun to drink on a schoolnight.

Founders Devil Dancer and Heavy Seas Loose Cannon is "Hop Cubed".

I don't actually accept triple IPA as a style. Oh, marketing...

I can confidently say that I've never seen a Triple IPA but it would be interesting to try one out! Are there many Triple IPA's that are widely available?

Simtra by Knee Deep is the only example on the style I've really enjoyed. Would love to plan a trip to go get some Pliny the Younger some year.

Simtra was one of my favorite beers that my girlfriend brought back from California. So smooth, so tasty, and so good!

Green Flash Green Bullet is pretty widely available and is a triple IPA. When it's fresh, it's pretty good. That's the only one I've ever seen in person, have heard of many such as Devil Dancer and Simtra as others have mentioned.

EDIT: can't forget about Sink The Bismark. That's a true triple ipa, think it's 41% ABV of craziness.

If Bourbon County Brand Stout isn't a triple Stout, then there's no such thing as a triple IPA. But, yea; marketing is a hell of a drug.

Knee Deep and maybe a few others also have beers labeled as quadruple IPAs. I say call everything over 8% an Imperial IPA and stop this marketing arms race.

Green Bullet is alright, Devil Dancer alright, Rye Cubed same, Molotov Cocktail will peel the paint off a boat hull.

For those of you that have tried Molotov Cocktail and Devil Dancer, is Molotov as sweet and malty as Devil dancer? Also, is Green Bullet that way? I've only tried Devil dance, and I didn't care for it at all. I love D/IPAs, but Devil Dancer was just super sweet and malty to me. Not what I want in an IPA.

Knee Deep has a few and they're all really good. They even have Hop De-Ranged which they call a qaud IPA. I think it's the beest of the bunch and at 13.3% abv it really packs a punch!

I have only tried Green Bullet and don't think it's too malty at all. I feel the same way as you do, can't stand a sweet IPA. I pretty much hate all of southern tiers ipa beers because of this. Gemini is the only one that I can stand. But Green Bullet is really tropically flavored to me and very exotic tasting in a good way with whatever hop blend that they use. Just has a pinch of maltiness but not near too much at all (for me).

Knee Deep has Hop-De Ranged...a Quad IPA at 13.2%....it's just an extremely bitter hot IPA....

Edit...just saw hophazzards post above...beat me to it...totally agree.

Had Moltov this week...worth drinking once or twice. Pretty interesting but I couldn't do more than one a day....

Prolly prefer to just stick with some easy drinkin' session IPA's by the pool...like Stones Go To...

My guess is that Hi-Res is labeled as a TIPA to differentiate it from Resin which is a DIPA.

I hate to say it but I think of TIPAs as mostly oddly sweet over-the-top messes (e.g. DFH 120, Devil Dancer, Molotov Cocktail).

I actually really like Hi-Res but I think because it tends to be more in the DIPA range even if the marketing says something different.
