This. I've had DFH 120 and Devil Dancer, and maybe one other TIPA, and that was my exact impression.

I don't enjoy this flavor whatsoever (at this point anyway; not saying its bad per se), but is this how they're all supposed to taste, or are there varieties out there that don't conform to this?

PTY strikes me as something that wouldn't really have this characteristic, but I've never had it.

Green Bullet by Green Flash is a triple and it's on the bottle...as with many triples...

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2743/92971/

It falls under imperial/double IPA on BA. As far as I know, BA doesn't even have a category for triple even though they're many brewed with the name and label.

    It's kind of like..."what is a craft brewery"...oooh...the technicalities of semantics...yawn.

Topic...many are brewed, many taste great, they aren't going anywhere and someday it may be an "official" style if the geeky beerlords christen it so...

"By declaration of those who have nothing better to do and in strict accordance to everything we make up...I dub thee...TRIPLE"!

I don't have a pic, but the new Hi Res packaging this year even says "IIIPA" on the outside of the box. 4 packs were being raffled off last night

The only thing 'Triple' about Devil Dancer is the price.

A few I've had that come to mind, which haven't been mentioned here:

Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree (12%) - Released in limited quantity in February - Says 'India Pale Ale' on the label, that way they don't differentiate the style and are most likely safe from Lagunitas' lawyers.

Knee Deep Hoparillo (11.1%) - Year round - Says 'Triple IPA' right on the label. They want you to know.

I'm with you on the Simtra and Younger. Glad Feb is near and Younget will be at certain places in my area.

I've tried Hoparillo but I like Simtra better.

I'm not a fan of calling them "Double IPAs" instead of "Imperial IPAs", but whatevs. The "Triple IPA" bullshit takes it too far. It actually brings up a question: What are American brewers afraid of? Why aren't there Quintuple IPAs? C'mon bros, come at me with your Octuple IPAs, ya bunch of pantywaisted lightweights!!! Who's gonna be the first to bring a Twelvefold IPA to market? C'mon, we consumers demand our Twelvefold!! (except you Lagunitas, you'll just try to copyright that shit, and then we'll have to listen to you cry again)

I think some brewers probably would want to push the envelope like this, but anything beyond a DIPA becomes extremely expensive to brew and isn't really cost effective for the brewrry anymore. This is the exact reason russian River only brews PTY in such a limited quantity.

Columbus Creeper is described as a "Triple IPA", but won a gold medal last year at GABF in Imperial IPA category.. "Imperial IPA" should cover all bases.. just like with stouts, you have Imperial Stouts.. You don't see many breweries using the "Triple Stout" moniker.. but whatever, it's really nothing worth stressing over.. but I've enjoyed alot of the "Triple IPAs" out there..

I just don't understand why you need a Triple IPA moniker when it is based off of ABV and ABV is printed right on the packaging. Why do I need a more general term that is based on a more specific description that is already easily available to the consumer?

I had PtY side by side with Boneyard's Notorious TIPA...thought Notorious was significantly better. Much more balanced and smooth. PtY is delicious though, even if it is incredibly over-hyped.

Other Half All Green Everything is a great one. Boneyard Notorious another great one. Simtra and Hoparillo good too in small doses.

I've had it a few times and while I agree with the not smooth / hot comment, the garlic / onion element is variable. I've had it when it was strong and when it was more or less absent. Maybe it's the balance (if using that word in relation to Simtra is possible) between the citra and simcoe ... with simcoe being the onion element.

Green Bullet by Green Flash also gave me a savor flavor I didn't love. At the time I was thinking onion / garlic but reading up on the flavor profile of Green Bullet hops, perhaps it was spicey / grassy notes.

IMHO with so much sweetness and alcohol inherent in the tripple IPA "style" fruitier hops work much, much better. Big, boozy sweet / savory beers just don't sit right with me.

I don't think session IPA (pale ale) or triple IPA (Barleywine or imperial IPA) are , or should be, styles. If making a style of beer in a higher alcohol format, why don't we see triple stouts and session Saisons as style labels as well?

Triple IPAs??? Brewers around here are doing quadruple IPAs. I had one clocking in at 17% ABV the other day. Like a glorified hoppy barley wine. Can't say I didn't enjoy it.

The only one mentioned which I have tried is Molotov Cocktail. I quite like it but have to set aside an evening when I don't have to work the next day to really enjoy it. Especially when I start the evening with Samiclaus.

Hell, let's just mix 'em all up and have a Session BSDA or an Imperial Light, or even a Triple Ultra.

A quadruple imperial session BBA Sati, anyone?

The words "imperial" and "session" should never be in the same sentence.
