Alright, in the name of science and beer nerds everywhere (but especially my beer nerd brothers in Minnesota), I went to MGM in Mankato this afternoon and purchased a case of Abrasive. The purchase included (3) 4-packs with a date code of 1/12/15 and (3) 4-packs with no date code.

The first beverage poured had a 1/12/15 date code .....

and the second beverage poured had no date code .....

Both cans were well-carbonated, and both tasted spectacular. Abrasive is my favorite beverage of all the beverages I've sampled, so when I read this thread before I went to the beverage store, I was ..... trepidatious. But the folks at MGM, when I announced my intentions to purchase a case, assured me that their "rep" promised this was not "flat beer like they're saying on BeerAdvocate."

So far, they're right - drinking pint #2, I've got lots of lacing and all the dankness Abrasive ever offered. Pint #1 was the same. And now, since I'm half in the bag after pounding 2 pints in around 30 minutes (I'm a beer nerd, not a boozer), I'll relinquish my scientific study and repair to the dinner table.

Have a great weekend, Minnesota beer nerds, and enjoy the majesty of Abrasive.

Agreed. People here are making mountains out of molehills. Quit being a bunch of bitches. I just finished my 8th Abrasive. One 4pack was 1/12 the other 1/13. The were all fantastic. If you feel yours was bad bring it back if it makes you feel better.

Opened a can dated 1/12 and the carbonation and flavor are much better than the 1/13 can I had yesterday. Can't wait to get more from the next run!!!

I don't understand why people are taking exception to those who are voicing their displeasure with receiving a subpar product.
"Hey Ford only one of my doors shut on my brand new F-150. Are others reporting similar problems? What are you doing about it?"
"My F150 works just fine, don't know what you're bitching about!"
"We were having some issues with the new machinery now that we switched to the all aluminum body. The next run should be perfect"

Poor comparison. Ford truck $40,000, 4pack of Abrasive $15. Your door handle doesn't shut on your truck bring it to the dealership and they fix it, and if you get a flat abrasive you bring it back for a refund. But crying and demanding they pull all abrasive off the shelf? Give me a break

I agree with your statement. However, if anyone really wants something done about it, they should contact the brewery. Complaining over and over on this forum is not going to do much about it. I am saying this in all seriousness; someone who has had a flat can should type a form letter and post it to this page. That way, if anyone else experiences the same issue, they can easily email the brewery.

While I have no idea about 25%, do keep in mind that probably a number of those people that bought the 400 4pks either don't know any better about the carbonation level and think that's normal for Abrasive or, like others, just can't be bothered to return a defective product (or will be returning it in the coming days). While many retailers say they'll return product (and I have no doubt that you will), in the past when I've had a beer from somewhere that wasn't what it should have been I haven't bothered with trying to return it, -especially- if I don't know that its a widespread problem (like most probably don't) and think that I'll have to argue with someone for it.

Not doubting you at all since I do enjoy the store, but solely taking a look at returns thus far problems isn't the best measure.

You're right, everyone should just suck it up and shut their mouths! I mean as long as the item doesn't cost $40k people should just be happy it isn't the USSR in mid 80's and there are things on the shelves to buy. Forget the product that they are purchasing is priced as a luxury item in that marketplace.

Flat. First 4-pack I've purchased. Head lasts about 30 seconds with an aggressive pour in a (very) clean glass. Hard to judge taste on this since the carb level is so off. It seems way to sweet and syrupy without the proper lightness from the carb. I'm guessing it would taste about right otherwise. 1/13.

I used to like Abrasive. I still do, but I used to, too.

Just popped open my first one, dated 1/13/15. For research purposes. Good. Nothing wrong.

On the other hand, I'm surprised Surly is letting this sit on the shelves. Only a tiny percentage of beer drinkers are on BA, & if a 'regular' person buys a crappy, flat, $16 four pack of Surly, they're apt to be a lot less forgiving than some of the homers.

    Do 'regular' people spend $12.99 - $15.99 on a 4-pack or Imperial I.P.A.? :grimacing:

I wager $20 on the fact that -with the unflinching support of Surly Nation- the brewery will weather this tempest in a teacup
