Cherry wheats came up a bit in the Worst Beer You've Had thread. I've had a couple myself, along with cherry stout and cherry porter (I like cherry, what can I say?).

I wouldn't call any of them the worst thing I've has, but almost all of them have one thing in common: the cherry flavor is too artificial, almost syrupy.

Has anyone has a cherry variety that was decent and not cloying?

Sam Smith's Organic Cherry is good. Has a 86 overall rating and it is easy to find in MA.

Cherry Adam from the Wood, New Glarus Belgian Red, and Central Waters BA Cherry Stout are all awesome, lots of real cherry flavor (not artificial) but not cloying.

Drie Fonteinen Intense Red is the most strongly cherry flavored beer I have enjoyed.

Crooked Stave's Mama Bear's Sour Cherry Pie was very good. I think cherry lends itself to wilds/sours a lot better than it does to stouts.

Aside from sours, it's hard to find a decent cherry beer. Cerise and Belgian Red immediately come to mind, but the former is out of season and the latter is only available in Wisconsin.

I did not think CW BA Cherry Stout was that good fresh- the cherry was too tart, did not suit the stout well- but hopefully it's mellowed out with a year on it. Of course, your mileage may vary: maybe you very much enjoy that slight tart aspect. Bell's Cherry Stout was another similar beer.

Hinterland Cherry Wheat. The brewery is close to Door County Wisconsin so you are getting real cherry flavor.
