hey all, this is a little dumb/silly/experimental. But has anyone ever tried bottling with candy for priming sugar? I'm wondering if blue gummy sharks would lend a noticeable residual flavor if used for bottling. Curious to hear your experiences if there are any. Thanks!

Sorry, I'm away from a computer and the search function doesn't work on the iPhone app. I did a quick google search and didn't find much of use. I'm really not seeing these hundreds of threads...

Haha there's no arguing with your logic, I'm just looking for some guidelines.

i hear your complaint about the search function on this site. so no clue what others have said before.

i will tell you that a local brewery makes a gummy bear ale. the colours are crazy electric. i don't recall if the bears go into boil or ferment or dry hop. i can find out if you like.
the simple question i'll ask you is this: in a gummy bear, what is/are the sugars used for priming? how much of those sugars will you have i.e. how will you hit your target CO2?

i'd just toss a lb into whirlpool and use it for a ferment versus using it to bottle. less mystery. more SCIENCE!

If you don't know how much sugar will ferment out with whatever you add to your bottles, you risk overcarbing /undercarbing/exploding bottles.

Thats pretty much what will happen.

I think hard candy would dissolve better over time.. I'm sure if you poured one of those beers you'd be left with some nasty looking, blue gelatinous shark at the bottom of your bottle. So if it were me, I'd try hard candy. But like others have said just make sure you find out how much fermentable sugar is in each piece. Compare the sugar content, to the sugar content in these:

Ahh, I was just trying to be funny since your idea seems so obscure. I would save this thought for the future and test out a few bottles during your next batch or two. Try a quarter of a shark (by weight), a half and a whole shark. (Or a range of more appropriate amounts - I have no idea how much sugar is in each shark.) Make sure to put the bottles in a garbage bag in case they blow. Then your following batch, you can dial it in even further. Good luck.

Only an idiot would not take the chance to sour their beer with sour gummy worms. :stuck_out_tongue:

If you bottle with gummy sharks, your homebrew privileges will be revoked for one year.

Sounds like a good way to waste a batch of beer but maybe it'll taste bomb?

Oh yeah, it's an incredibly stupid idea. I was thinking of maybe dissolving/melting them somehow and using as priming sugar for a gallon or so. Obviously attempting to calculate the sugar before to avoid shark bombs! WE'RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER BOAT! Thanks for the answers folks, I know it's a stupid idea, very Rogue-esque, but thank you for indulging me.

I'd dry shark and sink them in a bag with a rock from your garden for maximum extraction.
