drinking raises your blood sugar a lot, so when it goes down you get hungry, just like the more fast carb foods you eat, the hungrier you are afterwards, that's why slow carbs are best for dieting, they keep your blood sugar at a steady level, so you have less cravings, the carbs in alcohol are fast carbs so your blood sugar crashes after you drink, which is why you get hungry afterwards

I typically do get hungry after a session and even more so with a high ABV brew.

I don't always do it, but it's nice to try to pair the right munchies with the richer (and stronger) beers. Olives, cheeses, some simple sausage or cuts of various sorts. Smoked oysters and fish... even cheap, "cardboard pizza"~!

Usually with some black coffee to wash it all down, in between.

It's not the beer that stimulates your appetite, it's the alcohol. Enough of any type of alcoholic beverages gives me the munchies.

For me, it's when I combine the weed and the beer that I can smash enough food to feed an African village for a month.

    Truth^
-"The body maintains an adequate level of glucose in the blood using various mechanisms, one of which is gluconeogenesis in the liver. Gluconeogenesis is particularly significant at hours distant to meals when glucose released to the bloodstream from the liver is more prominent than dietary intake.

Biochemically, pyruvate and oxaloacetate at the initials steps of the gluconeogenesis pathway are shunted away due to increased levels of NADH that occur as a result of alcohol comsumption, so these molecules cannot be utilized to form new molecules of glucose.

On the other hand, glycolysis, which uses the available glucose for production of energy and several other purposes, is also prevented by the same high levels of NADH.

Alcohol consumed, namely ethanol is metabolised by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. This enzyme uses NAD as a cofactor to oxidise ethanol and produce acetaldehyde while NAD is reduced to NADH.
    (ethanol + NAD --> acetaldehyde + NADH + H)

In other words, your body on alcohol is in a state where it can neither use its available glucose nor create more glucose for use. This may lead to hypoglycemia or a less severe drop in blood sugar. Less sugar, and you feel hunger."

I'm always hungry after a night of drinking.

I usually try to find something simple that settles the stomach a bit. A few pieces of toast with peanut butter usually works, or crackers with some cheese, but once in a while I go straight to a cup of ice cream.:grinning:

i agree, appetite is stimulated after a good dose of beer, but typically it kicks in before I'm done with the beers... then I need more beer to go with the food... then more food to go with the beer...

drunk eating is mind over matter guys! Alcohol basically tricks your brain into thinking you need more food when you actually don't. It's appetite winning over actual hunger. If you can make it past the pizza places and hot dog stands on the way home from the bar, drink a lot lot lot of water and have some plain graham crackers with a little bit of honey. Wash it down with some tylenol, and viola. munchies and hangover lessened.

Taking Tylenol or any acetaminophen based pain reliever while drinking alcohol should be avoided at all costs. Very bad mix for your liver

Ummmm. I guess so. And it's also been rumored that beer drinking causes beer bellies.

I was just having this conversation with my boss the other day. He never gets hungry when he drinks however I get the beer munchies like there is no tomorrow by the time i catch a buzz. I'll crave anything from fast food, tacos, pizza, etc. During the holidays I'll have a couple brews before eating and everything tastes amazing!

It causes hunger to a certain degree. Nothing like the hunger experienced from another substance that's legal in certain states. I've been known to down an entire pizza from the usage of both substances (back when I used to partake).
