Our Special Ale is quite literally what it's called:

I was just wondering... I didn't mean anything by it... No hard feelings.

I didn't know it was called 'Our Special Ale'. Thanks for clarification.

That is the name of the beer. Up through 2002(?) it was prominently in the label of the beer, then for a couple of years it was a smaller descriptor in the label copy points. Then back in 2004, then back to copy point since. But in essence that has always been the name of the beer, Anchor Brewing, Our Special Ale.

I used to drink the Porter regularly in the early 90s.

Now it can't be found in Central VA. I recently had to pick up a 12 bottle variety sampler in order to get three Porters. Haven't been able to bring myself to drink the last one.

I sure wish 6 packs of Porter were easy to find here.

If I were you, I would contact Anchor and / or their distributor in your area.....probably very likely you can have your favorite retailer order it for you...I have done this before

I was never a fan of the Steam. Had it local many times over Crab etc, never got over that twang it has for me. But I always thought the porter was top of the line for an American version of The english Orginal. Thanks for the history lesson we never knew all that before, lol. :grinning::grinning::grinning::grinning::grinning:

I really like the California Common style, I wish more brewers made it. Haven't had a Steam in a while - will have to pick some up sometime. In NY Barrier and Peekskill make great versions.

Generally I have to buy a case when placing a special order. I tend not to do that as I vary what I drink.

    Thanks for starting the thread!

Beckles is a delicious brown ale. It's my third favorite Anchor beer, behind Steam and the California Lager.

Their Porter is awesome but the Winter Wheat REALLY caught my attention for a beer style I usually wouldn't have tried...Seems like a long time ago when it was just Sierra and Anchor....

As a whole, and since I have tried so many of their beers, may be my favorite brewery. Haven't had a disappointment yet. Nice thread

I hate admitting this but I find myself passing over the Steam for the California Lager of these days. I haven't seen the lager on tap yet has anyone in North NJ?

When I was a youthful NorCal dude in the early 1980s, Steam, Porter, and Liberty Ale were probably my favorite American beers. I still pick up a six of one or the other these days, as well as the lovely Brekle's Brown when I can find it, the fantastic California Lager, and, until recently, the Bock. And the Foghorn once in a blue moon.

I love Anchor but I can imagine that if you don't like one of their beers, you might find yourself not liking most of them, since they all tend to have a signature flavor note that I assume is from the yeast. (To me it comes across as sort of spicy/fruity.)

I absolutely love Anchor brewing and their beers are a staple in my refrigerator. My two favorites that I always have on hand are their California Lager and Steam Beer.

    Cheers!

Liberty Ale is my favorite Anchor brew, also enjoyed this year's Our Special Ale.

The funny thing for me is, the bottle shop I go to never has it (sells out fast?), so I have to purchase it at Trader Joe's.

I've been wanting to try some of Anchor's beer; seems pretty hard to find around here, though.

I've seen the Steam Beer at Kroger but it was crazily expensive there (something like $11.49 for a six-pack while almost all other craft and import beers were in the $8.99 to $10 range... if I'm remembering right, Anchor Steam Beer was the most expensive six-pack in the whole store), which is really odd considering that most posts around here describe Anchor as being pretty affordable... I could've sworn I saw it at Food Lion once for something more in the $8-9 range, but every time I've looked since then I didn't see it there at all. I've also spotted the California Lager at Kroger, they only had 12-packs for some odd reason. Never seen their porter, Christmas ale, etc. around here at all.
