I don't know how hard this information is to obtain or calculate or the level of accuracy that the new law requires. New Belgium is able to provide calorie information for their beer and other craft brewers do as well but this might be more difficult for the smaller brewer to come up with if the law is filled with difficult test methods for determining the calories in a beverage. Chains with more than 20 outlets generally do not carry the smaller brewers who might have trouble meeting the law's requirements. Besides no amount of data is going to cause me to choose a Miller Lite over a Surly Furious - I don't care how many calories it has.

According to at least one other (and more recent) article it's not so bad.

"The new rules are designed to not be too burdensome for the alcohol industries or restaurants. Endless combinations of mixed drinks won't have to be labeled at bars, unless they are listed on a menu, and the FDA is allowing restaurants to use estimates of calories and ranges of calories without listing the exact amount in every different drink. That means menus are required to list the average amount of calories in a glass of red or white wine, but won't have to list calories by every brand of wine on the wine list unless they choose to do so. Same with beers and spirits.

So most wineries and craft breweries selling to chain restaurants won't have to pay to have their products' nutritional content analyzed — for now, at least."

So a simple "We estimate that any beer on our menu has about X number of calories" should do it?

Put the calories on or leave them off. Either way we all should know put it in and burn it  or sit and collect it :slight_frown:

Depending on the style that would probably cover most things. Aside from big heavy beers, ABV is what really impacts calorie counts moreso than carbs etc.

A simple 100 calories per 3%abv per 12 oz calculation would be plenty. Add an estimate asterisk and everything will be fine. If Brewers aren't required to have calorie information that's the best you can do.

"I don't give a shit what the calories are, if it tastes good Imma gonna drink it" said Rochefort Chris. And there lies the truth. People don't care much or even look at calorie labeling (Me neither) so I wonder why the FDA would try imposing a failed program for no good reasons

People haven't quit eating fatty and sweet food because of nutrition information. Calorie counts won't discourage people from drinking beer either.

I wish all beers had the calories on the bottle.
I'm a smart person and can do simple math regarding abv and calorie conversion but some people need to see a big number on he side of the bottle to realize what they are drinking.
But if you don't care, you don't care.

Maybe there will be an increase in sales of bomb calorimeters. :grinning: Just kidding. Like another poster said, they probably won't be affected by this.

Yes, I would like to see this a lot, MyFitnessPal is pretty helpful about it though.

Doesnt have many beers in it though. I have a calorie based on ABV and serving chart though that I can use to guesstimate.

On MyFitnessPal all you need to do is, for instance, put in "6% beer" and then there you go. That's what I do. At this point, if I know a beer's ABV, I mostly have the calories memorized.

5% beer has 150 calories, 10% has 300 calories (per 12oz serving). Each % a beer goes up, add 30 calories.

This is great! Why, I can't count how many times I've been sitting at a bar or restaurant and said to myself, "Gee, I wonder how many calories are in each of these delicious stouts I'm having?"

Oh, wait, yes I can. It's zero. Jes' gimme the damn beer.
