Question says it... Should an extra be a total surprise, or should you explain what it is and why you sent it? You know, something like:

Hey man, here's your tracking number for the GI Rare. Oh, and BTW, as an extra I sent along this beer called King Henry. I sent it because it aged in the exact same barrels right after Rare was removed. Thought they'd go good together.

Yeah I know anybody would know that (but that would still be an awesome note to get?!). I've included some oddball extras that go with a traded beer from time to time and I like to explain what it is and why I sent it.

If I felt it needed an explanation, I'd put a note in the box, or explain it via a message after they receive it.

I think I enjoy the element of surprise more than the explanation.

If there's something to add about a particular bottle, I'll usually throw it in after the exchange and after they've had the thrill of opening.

Sometimes I'll mention extras if I'm trading with someone who hasn't traded much before but otherwise I'll just throw something in and let the other person be surprised.

Kinda different to what you are saying OP but I hate it when people use extras as a negotiation tactic. For example, I know you want the GI Rare, but I really want 20 Atrial, fine I'll throw in a King Henry as an extra.
Not to say anyone would do that either, but I've noticed that people "announce" the extras they'll toss in when making a post. That to me isn't an extra, but rather an extended negotiation.

What I really want to know is if you still have any Rare left for trade :grinning:

Seriously though, I only explain about extras, if I feel that it's necessary, after the box is opened by the receiver. If I'm trading with someone new, I ask that they review my profile for info on trading including shipping and extra preferences, which I decided to put in there to save me from keep having to re-type.

Extras are like the fries at the bottom of a McDonald's bag. I'll either stalk their profile or ask if they are opposed to any beer styles. Then you have free reign!

The only time I talk about extras is when I ask for no extras. perfect example was last week. made a trade 1:2 (i sent the two).... After looking through my boxes, I realized I had a 2 bottle shipper and 4-12 bottle shippers. Before sending, I emailed my trade partner and said "Hey, dont throw in any extras. Normally, I do, but dont have the correct shipper to send extras." He responded, sent me the one bottle and we had good communication.

In the event that I have a 6 bottle shipper lying around and trade a few bottles away, I normally try to fill the 6 shipper and wait for a response from the recipient.

My point is, I dont ever talk about extras, unless I dont have room to send any.

I'll usually message the person after I ship, to inform them of what to expect...it allows me a space to talk about the extras and why I chose them, and also guards against pilfering FedEx hands in case the box is compromised in any way. Most times, the recipient has already shipped, so it's not as though I'm noting my extras to demand anything in kind.

Agreed here. Extras are extra. I don't announce them and like for people to be surprised.

If someone tries to negotiate extras in a trade, then they are no longer extras, they are just a part of the trade.

I usually always ask what the other guy/gals favorite styles are and if their 'wants' list is up to date. Then I fill in any space in the box with extras.

With new trading partners I try to expand the trade for $20-$30 in locals, we tell each other our favorite styles, and then cancel "extras" all together. It guarantees a surprise for both sides, since we don't know exactly what we're getting.

When trading with established partners anything is fair game... It ends up with each side trying to "out-extra" the other.

I like the surprise! If you know what it is, it doesn't really feel like an extra. I love surprising people with extras too, although I have been disappointed by an extra or two before (unrightfully so because free beer) so I think it comes with the excitement. I enjoy trading blind boxes with people too so maybe that's just me, I like opening things and seeing what they wanted to give me.

I always ask before I ship. Mostly along the lines of, "mind if I include a few extras? What styles do you like?"

I have a trade forthcoming and I was thinking about asking them, as they don't update their hads on here, whether they had already tried it.

Nevernevernever. I'd hate to know what extras are coming. Just like I don't ask what Santa is bringing.

In $4$ trades I usually mention that I'm throwing in a few extras. I don't mention what those extras are, but going on a strictly $4$ basis, I wanted to make sure my trading partner and I were on the same page.

Usually I won't mention anything about extras unless I'm sending someone a 4 pack and have a 6 bottle shipper or something along those lines.
