Beyond the Super Bowl commercials, what I have been wondering about for the last couple of months is, where are all the craft commercials at?

Its not like they need to be on the television, most of us use YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram and other video outlets. I believe, that is the key. All of these craft breweries have GoPro's or someone in their setup that does. Just make a funny commercial that we all can enjoy and post it on your introduction webpage.

    Where is Cigar City's commercial?
Where is a real Stone commercial with their humorous gargoyle mascot?
Where is The Bruery's top-class brewing portrayed at?
I want another Goose Island commercial. Geese are easier to find.
We need a Pliny the Elder and Younger commercial, or teaser. Get an old man to do a video.

It doesn't take much and that's what it takes. The video's that most of the these companies have up have a couple thousand hits, at that. They're so plain jane, with unrehearsed interviews. The beer is already paving their way, every single day but I personally feel, most of these breweries are just lacking in advertisement. Most of the breweries are wondering what their distribution connections are doing to get their product out but really, it just comes from exposure from video these days.

I have some really great ideas for them.

I don't think most breweries have the budget to do much video advertising in any fashion, but I think the bigger breweries are just getting started in doing that. I recently saw a commercial from New Holland (I think it was them), but I don't recall if it was on a local TV channel or a cable channel. New Holland is the 4th largest brewery in Michigan, and I think they distribute to around 20-25 states, so they could be doing regional ads as well as local. But maybe they were just testing a local broadcast to help them decide if the dollars spent are worth going regional.

I used to think the old Miller Lite and Budweiser commercials were funny/good, I can't imagine a craft beer ad...I envision something really cheezy with nothing but guys with beards

Many of the larger craft breweries have capacity problems and don't need to run ads of any kind.

My understanding is that for most craft brewers, margins are tight.

Also, some of the places you listed (Russian River in particular) have no problem selling all of their beer. In fact, RR can't come close to meeting demand. The point of advertising is to sell more product. If you're already selling it all, you don't need advertising.

At the moment, that's true to some extent to the idea that breweries are brewing to their region but what I'm trying to perceive is exponential growth. Like Surly, who just went real big, Boulevard advertises a lot in Kansas City. Samuel Adams, as well, who are caught in the cross-hairs of big and little, they're losing their identity already. Cigar City can't stop expanding, Sierra Nevada is rowing the same boat, even Copper Tail, who you may have not heard of, is massive. That will fade as fast as it came in the first place if they don't start picking up young adults via social media and so forth for middle-agers. There are over 3,000 breweries in the US and the birds are about to be squawking at each other in the upcoming years as distributors appear and disappear and drop accounts and pick up accounts. A lot of breweries are making hand over fist on demand, mark-up, bottle releases and what not, that's why I mentioned the ones in the lead, at this moment.

It didn't cost anything for Abita or Hopwhatever to produce that commerical in less than 24 hours to rebuttal Bud and how many hits does it have? 151,000 hits. Abita's: 15,000 hits

This is craft beer ad. 2009

    66,000 hits.

It's effective. They just have to keep hitting it.

Here's the Troegs ad. It's a 'classic', and has almost as many hits as the IAACB spot:

Craft beer needs no commercials and it's pretty obvious.

Deschutes runs ads on Pandora internet radio. I'm pretty sure thats the only craft beer commercial I've ever seen and I'm not surprised. Doesn't seem necessary to me.

    A few more thoughts:

Boston Brewing Company has made used of radio advertisements in key markets for many years. Television ads in recent years have also been fairly common -- an example of each:

    http://www.ispot.tv/ad/7MjZ/samuel-adams-boston-lager-back-on-the-map

I know of several regional brewers with ads that are region and market-specific, including old-line lager breweries Stevens Point, August Schell... and Leinenkugel (who were once considered a "Microbrewery", but that's a while ago.)

For what it's worth, I believe that Radio is still an effective medium, and if you ask people in advertising, they'll say it's a cost-effective one, also, and I'm surprised that more Craft Brewers aren't making use of it while they can (at least until feel the need to budget for television ads.)

As others have pointed out it’s a budget thing. You gotta have cash to make a commercial or have one made for you. (And with social media out there, why spend your money on a commercial? There are all kinds of youtube videos of folks reviewing beers online. Seems a lot more powerful a marketing tool than a brewery sponsored commercial.)

But here's a Brewery ad with over 35K hits.

I think the best way from Craft Breweries to advertise themselves is to sponsor events. In New Brunswick, Picaroons, the largest craft brewery in the province, sponsors events year long. Whether its a music festival or a simple taste testing, sponsoring events is a great way to get your name and your beer out in the open.

No need for them but...if they were to be as crafty with their commercials as they are naming their beers, I reckon it would be a real hoot to see what they could come out with.

Well, the minute a brewery starts making a successful commercial, all the cool drinkers will whine that "everyone else knows about them now, so I hate 'em".

Here's another commercial from Steven's Point, and it's the one I wanted to originally post. "The End or the Beginning" was pretty much internet-only, and was promoted through Point's social media (Facebook) networking.

If little 'ol Point can do this, I wonder what some of the bigger Craft Breweries can dream up.
