Stout BIF Round IV

One thing I don't think Dave really covered was your question about doing a Wants list here. The Top 250* and Beers of Fame lists are both a great starting point, then branch out from there by also adding other beers by the breweries that make those beers.

You can also go to the top beers by state and by style, sorted by number of ratings, and if you click the link on those pages that says "Top X Beers" you get the same volume-weighted results (vs sorting by rating where you'll have to sift through one-offs with 3 ratings)

Especially once you think you know who your sender is, I recommend going to their state's listing (both the breweries in that state and the top beers from that state) and finding some Wants that way.


*When using the Top 250 List, don't just go down the list and Want everything on it and nothing else; especially items like BVDL and KBBS, it's sort of assumed that you'd want that, and also obvious that you aren't getting it in a BIF. Nothing wrong with adding those, but it's very frustrating to look at a Wants list with nothing but these type of beers.

A longer list will help your sender know not just what specific beers you want, but what styles you're interested in to find some "should-be wants".

 

I've found a great way to discover new beers to add to my wants. I just regularly click on the beers menu on the mobile app and it shows all the most recent rated beers. Amazing what you can find there that you may never have otherwise!

 

I also like to look at post your latest hauls or daily drinking thread.... or just roll the dice...

I just watch all the #VBS in the Locals and SWTFYW, and like all the ones I see...

 

This is like "Wants List 102" to my "101" ... going through Hints & Haul threads like those and looking at beer pron is a great way to find wants.

edit: Don't limit yourself to the VBS (beer in a glass) pics, the box contents pics are at least as valuable too.

One other question. I assume that once the box(es) are well beyond the 'bare minimum' it wouldn't be hugely frowned upon to also send some non stouts? E.g. this guy Troy you might've heard of making epic beers of a wild origin...:-)

 

Yeah you're totally good sending non-stouts beyond the minimum. Last round I sent two "imperial porters" (basically stouts) and the rest of the box was entirely stouts; but I think I was the only one who came anywhere close to an all-stout box.

come on now, nothing but dark beers in the box I sent, and even had that Barrel Aged Guinness!!! I think someone in this BIF will be getting one of these too.

edit: I'll be damned, you sure as hell did. A bit heavier on the porter:stout ratio, but you sure are 100% right. Hell of a nice haul too, you really don't mess around! (Not that I had any doubts )

 

Targets, sweet... Though I won't be able to work tomorrow if I want to keep up with the hints...

Well I was the opposite. My last target was @IPAFan521 and there were several non stouts in his box

I for one love stouts and sours and would not frown on anything sour in my box.

 

And the madness begins! How many people did we have last round? 40 right? An extra 12 box (es) of pron, this is gonna be nice. I would also not be one bit disappointed in seeing something of a sour nature in box.

 

There is a joke in there somewhere... I can feel it!

 

Where are these targets? I am tired of doing my job at work and want to plan my BIF box instead.
