Just cracked open a bottle of Alden after seeing nothing but good reviews on here and untappd. I wanted to know what everyones thoughts were and if they got that diacetyl taste. It reminds me a lot like captains daughter, and we all know they have had their issues. Maybe i got a bad bottle!?
I had a couple of bottles that were pretty solid. Nothing spectacular, but I have one more that I will drink happily. No off tastes for me so far. Do you have more to try?
I'm on the lookout for it. I've always found Mayflower's flagships (particularly the Porter and the IPA) and seasonals (especially the Spring Hop Ale and the Winter Stout) to be consistently reliable brews, and I'm always happy to try their one-offs. As others have mentioned elsewhere their recent Scotch Ale was really good. I don't expect Alden to blow my hair waaaaaaaay back since Mayflower tends to be less than XTREME, but I expect that I'll be quite pleased to drink it. (And I hope I don't pick up any diacetyl because that tends to put me off.)
I liked Alden. It had a nice grapefruit flavor. I did not catch any diacetyl at all. I've had 2 bottles and nothing. As for Captain's Daughter, I'm having the newest batch as I type and there's no diacetyl at all.
Drank my four-pack with others over the course of a week or so as well as having it on tap several places. Always really good. No diacetyl or off flavors to speak of. If you feel like you got a bad batch or bottle, email them! Link to this thread too.
No issues with mine. Thought it was rock solid and slightly above average for the style, which always seems to be the case with Mayflower
No issues with a 4 pk we drank. Enjoyed it quite a bit. Very clean, pine, and grapefruit. Reminded me of a Sierra Nevada DIPA.
Picked up a 4pak of this yesterday bottle dated 1/19/15. Super pumped to drink this incredibly fresh local dipa while watching our pats roll on to win the Super Bowl this evening. Prost!
Hmm, I stopped buying their because all their beers were becoming so inconsistent in quality. Bottles were sometimes overcarbed and tasted/smelled plastic-y. There was an initial batch of spring hop that was flat and buttery one year (basically every year of it has been bad though, nothing close to when it was first released). Had the porter a few times where it was very watery and lacking any flavor. Those were just a few things I could remember in a string of bad experiences I've had with their beer.
Had this one on tap last night and I have to agree with most of what has been said. It is a solid and above average DIPA. Glad I had a chance to try it as it is drinkable, but nothing spectacular.
Just had one tonight and I enjoyed it. Not that much in the way of sweet and juicy flavors to me, much more on the pine & pith end of the spectrum. Bitterness was pronounced but still in balance with the beer as a whole. It reminded me of the double IPA that I had from Long Trail a few years back. Pretty easy drinking for the IBUs. I think I liked the Scotch Ale better in terms of personal preference within the given styles but the Cooper's Series is 2 for 2 so far in my book.
