The "Food Babe" wins another one...

It is? I must travel in the wrong circles (thankfully).

Never have been a fan of Newcastle Brown. I've always thought it a rather cheaply made beer. Now that I've learned they use caramel coloring I'm convinced.

I have spent WAY more than 30 Days in the Hole with my beloved Newcastle Brown. (yeah yeah you don't dig it, I do). It's a damn shame that life is the leading cause of death.

I bought a 12 pack on a whim at discount from a local liquor store that was going out of business. It was OK; I rated it about a 3, which is below the average rating for this beer on this site. I probably won't buy it again, though...

Oh no -- fish bladder in Guinness? Who'd'a thunk?

(is that pointed out in case any vegan mistakenly drinks a Guinness, or is she just grossed out? :astonished:)

JK, my read is that it is the UK where the nickname applies:

“The beer is one of the best selling in the United States, where, as in the UK, it is also nicknamed "Dog".

The nickname comes from the euphemism "I'm going to walk the dog", meaning "I'm going to the pub". It was also popularised by a 1980s advertising campaign.”

    Cheers!

I guess tens of thousands must have died from consuming the caramel colouring that has been a part of the recipe since 1927. Thanks a lot Food Babe. The planet is being overrun with morons.

"Tweaking with the colour won't have any impact on the taste of Newcastle Brown."

    Bummer...

Why put fakeness in beer, that's just wrong. Pounded a 12er of this last weekend, doubt if I will buy again now.

American buyers of Newcastle are worried about what again exactly?? That's a bit pot calling the kettle black.

Eh? From what I read in the linked article, the beer currently has caramel coloring in it but won't have that anymore after they change the recipe, using roasted malts to get the same color instead. So... wouldn't that be taking the fakeness out rather than putting it in?

I'm honestly kinda surprised there's not a more positive response to this news considering that the last time I saw Newcastle mentioned on here, one of the major complaints seemed to be that it used caramel coloring to get the beer the color it is rather than brewing it in such a way that it would naturally turn out that shade of brown.

I've never tried Newcastle Brown Ale before (mostly because I've been shying away from anything that comes in a clear bottle for fear of "skunk"), but maybe I will once the new recipe ends up on shelves. Don't they make it in cans too? I've never seen them but I know I've seen other people mention cans of it existing...

The 12 pack I bought was fully enclosed.

I will order it on tap if I have no other choice but I have quit buying the bottles - too many places that are trying to cash in on the craft beer boom pull the clear bottles out of the enclosed 12-packs and put them on the top shelf where they can bathe in bright fluorescent light and get skunky. Now that they are taking out the fake caramel coloring I am going to have to explore other was to shorten my life.
