Still working through the box of beers for the NBS BIF that @superspak sent me. Tonight's selection is Morningwood Stout from OddSide Ales:

This is real good stuff here, starts with chocolate, coffee, and a mild bourbon sweetness with a hint of alcohol burn. The best part is it really mellows out as it warms into a real nice slightly sweet bourbon/chocolate stout.

    Cheers!

Haven't seen you on the site in well over a year, dude... :grimacing: Where ya been? :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey, listen, I was hoping to turn up the first NBS post, but @blue-dream said it was deleted from the annals some time ago.
Any chance you could recall the first beer featured, or any deets from the first NBS thread when you host?
    That'd be kinda neat.

    Until then, cheers...

This is Gizmo Brew Works Black Hop Down India Black Ale- whew!! out of Raleigh.
Pours a very dark black moving to a brown edge, with a lingering tan/white head. A very nice looking beer. The nose is slightly roasty, with a rich malt/bread (pumpernickel) note, complete with cocoa.
Big, deep, bold and roasty, yet lighter than the looks and aroma lead you to believe- which is nice. This beer has the weight and structure of a bigger IPA, but is dark and roasty and- God forbid- shows nice malt character. A damned good India Black Ale. The hoppiness is pronounced and blends perfectly with the malts and finishes very dry. A very well made beer. Good work!

Math-head??? I'm a goddamned musician and historian. None of that screams math-head, thank you very much.

In all frivolity, I hope no one was offended by my suggestion that this is not technically the 10th anniversary thread. I 100% support the celebration today. I'm also just one of those easily irked by technical inconsistencies (Jeff, you know this; you've seen my Facebook :stuck_out_tongue:). I think one can have it both ways: celebrate the 10 year anniversary, whilst also understanding that it's not exactly 10 years today (not for another 1.7 weeks, I guess), whilst also also understanding that it's all good.

OT: I had a great afternoon of beer, friends, and fun. Sadly, nothing else new to me today. So I'm glad I had a great American brew (to borrow a turn of phrase from Dave) to help kick off today's thread.

    Cheers, NBSers!

    New Smoked Porter Sunday

Greetings, fellow NBS'rs, and a happy tenth to this thread. I've had a couple tasty beers today while working at home, but none were new to me. Then I remembered I had an untried gem (or so I hoped) waiting for me down in the cellar, and I realized I could contribute to the 520th iteration of this thread. Nice!

Stone's Smoked Porter with Vanilla Bean

I really, really liked this beer. The smoke was definitely there, both on the nose and in the flavor, but it didn't taste like I was drinking bacon. I was really surprised by how much of a punch the vanilla packed; so many beers with "vanilla added" seem to have no vanilla at all. But here, the vanilla brought a rich, creamy sweetness to the beer that nicely complemented the flavors of smoked wood, cocoa powder, and spent coffee grounds.

Overall, a really nice porter with good smoke flavors and aromas, and lots of vanilla to boot.

And for my last new beer, a bit of a departure....

    Jack's Abby Framinghammer Baltic Porter.

A: Pours completely black with a little more then a finger of khaki head that dissipates slowly to leave a layer of froth blanketing the surface of the beer.

S: The aroma is of burnt malt and chocolate. Very sweet on the nose, no booze yet.

T: This is a wonderfully balanced porter. Dark chocolate and fresh coffee play in strongly. There are some hops hidden in there, but the middle and finish become a smokey, boozey, warm mix of sensations. It leaves a spicy note afterwards. Very enjoyable.

F: Absolutely the thick, creamy, foamy milkshake that it should be. Feel is fantastic.

O: Every Jack's Abby beer I've had has been amazing and this is absolutely no exception. A strong example of everything a good porter should be, and and absolute joy to sip. Should be on every BA's "must try" list.

Cheers, have a safe week my NBS friends!

Given I studied accounting many years ago, a didn't mind the "dig" so much (I did confirm for myself @Roguer's math after reading his post :flushed:); also, I've been called a lot of worse things involving other parts of the anatomy :grimacing:.

Happy 10th NBS! I have only been a part of this thread for a short while, but it has been a great time sharing and enjoying new beers with everyone! Here is today's new ones for me:

This is a very good Gose. Nice aromas with tart lemons/limes and some cracker/bready malt and coriander/sea salt notes. Taste of lightly tart lemon, lime, green apple, white grape, coriander, sea salt, wheat, cracker, bread, herbal, straw, grass, light pepper with some herbal/yeasty earthiness. Slight tartness on the finish. Very well balanced malt, spice, and yeast flavors. Not as tart as I hoped for though, but everything else was in line with what I expected. Very smooth and crisp finish with some light salinity/bready creaminess present from the salt and unmalted fermentables. Never watery in flavors. Overall, really tasty and enjoyable. Just needed more tartness going on really. 3.8
    [IMG]

This is really excellent. Big spice forward aromas of cinnamon/clove/nutmeg/ginger with raisin/molasses notes and chocolate/spiced rum. Taste of big raisin, molasses, toffee, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, ginger, brown sugar, brown bread, chocolate, toast, spiced rum, and herbal spice earthiness. Light earthy spice finish. Really well balanced and mellowed out spice flavors with the darker malt and spiced rum flavors. Not really getting any oak notes, but a definite toffee note from the barrel age is present. Very smooth with well hidden alcohol, only some light warmth on the finish. Nicely creamy with a touch of slickness on the mouthfeel. Really great stuff. I am definitely a fan of the regular stuff, the barrel basically mellows out the spice and adds a nice spiced rum component. Really tasty. 4.1
    [IMG]

Really nice English Barleywine. Aged it for a bit here, Dec 2013 vintage. Big aromas with raisin, apricot, plum, fig, pear, apple, citrus zest with moderate herbal/pine hop earthiness; and caramel, toffee, biscuit, and toasted oak notes with a touch of vanilla. Really nice and balanced between yeast, malt, and hop presence. Taste of big raisin, apricot, plum, fig, pear, apple, citrus zest, caramel, toffee, toasted biscuit, oak, light vanilla, herbal, grass, and light pine. Some light herbal/pine bitterness on the finish. Really well balanced malt, yeast, and hop flavors. Not overly bitter and a nice fairly creamy mouthfeel. Very smooth sipper for 10.7% with very restrained warmth on the finish. I really have zero complaints about this one. Delicious. 4

Happy New Flanders Red Ale Sunday!

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/216/1882/?ba=MadCat

First of all, I'm amazed this thread has been around this long! I joined somewhere between 3 and 4 years ago and have been posting in it on and off. It is one of the things that keeps me posting on BA. Don't need an excuse to drink a new beer though! Today has been a pretty good day, got into the 50's here in NJ. Got to get some things done and get some family time in. Today's brew comes from a mixed sixer from a local store. I ended up doing half things I've had but never reviewed, and half new stuff. From the new stuff is Rodenbach Classic, which is also a new style for me, the Flanders Red Ale. This is only the second sour I've had, and I think I'm going to need to get more. I'm glad I liked it because I also picked up a bottle of Rodenbach Grand Cru on a separate trip. It is a fairly interesting brew, and I really enjoy the drinkability and tartness. Nice change of pace from the hop bombs, or the big stouts that are so popular. I think I need to find a homebrew recipe for something like this. And now I'm looking to see if my favorite beer bar on the west coast carries them for when I go there in a few weeks.

Good evening BAs! Spent the first 9 hours today dog sitting for our son then most of the rest of the time at the hospital with my mother. So I finally get a chance to post on NBS. Today's goodie is this selection from @BigRedDog from the first NBS BIF - a coconut milk stout. Since I'm a big fan of Thai cooking in general and coconut-based dishes in particular, this is right up my alley. The coconut shows up better as the brew warms and isn't real evident in the initial aroma. The coconut flavor is weak and is more typical of a coconut-based water rather than coconut milk or shredded coconut. That said, it's still a pretty good milk stout.

    Here's my review:

    4.67/5 rDev +9.1%
    look: 4.75 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.75 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.75

Got this can in a trade with @RocketCityVol poured into my SN IPA Glass

A: - Beautiful golden color, 2 finger thick head and great lacing.

S: - Citrus and pine aroma up front. The fruits ling on the nose.

T - Very little bitterness. Sweet fruits like tangerine and orange maybe some green apple in there as well. There is some malt there but it doesn't get in the way of the hoppy goodness.

M - Surprisingly viscous for a DIPA but in a good way. The fruits linger but the pine and some grassiesss is there in the finish. Very little alcohol burn for a 10%.

Overall - Wow, what a great DIPA. If this was available to me I would pick it up constantly. The only way I would improve it is put it ina 16 oz can instead of the current 12 ouncer.

Glad you liked it. 18th street is a hidden gem of NW Indiana. They make awesome beers. Having just moved up here, 18th street, Four Fathers, and Burn'em have quickly become my favorite local breweries. (Even though I live 45 mins from FFF. I know, heresy...)

Happy NBS, did y'all miss me? I've had the flu.
Not sure if my sinuses are functional enough to do this one justice but I think it might give lefthand a run for the money on a great creamy stout. Better yet this one is dairy free, so my lactose intolerant self can have it without making my husband threatening to make me sleep on the porch.
    Cheers y'all.

    @SammyJaxxxx

From my not so distant college years spent in Alabama, this is the beer that I miss the most. In fact it is the IPA that turned me onto IPAs (that and 90 min). I liked how it had an awesome bitter flash on the front that faded quickly to the true lingering flavor.

Damn, reminiscing about it makes me want some.
