Why are Bell's beers either World Class or really "average"?

But still saw the one that had the several "butthead" lines in it, no?

I'm on my second hopslam right now.

Just curious how Goose Island would enter into this conversation? Although I've never had the legendary BCBS, I thought their IPA was one of the most blah IPAs I've had. Personally I associate Bell's with very high quality, but with respect to this thread, does GI just fill the spectrum between totally average and amazing instead of the supposed gap? Not to mention GI, hasn't GI been owned by InBev/BUD since before everyone freaked out about Elysian? -But that's for a different conversation..

Add java stout to that list as far below average.

Bell's is my favorite brewery hands down. That being said, they don't make their beer available!! They need to put more effort into specialty releases. They have them but don't put them in stores...why? Where the F is black note?!!

Umm, maybe a hard concept to swallow:wink:, but perhaps the brewers liked it. And you didn't.

I haven't tried a staggering amount of Berliner weisse, but Oarsman was just delightful. I loved it. Probably the best I've had (1804 is the only one that I can think of that gives it a run for its money).

Relax. As I pointed out above, you are not The ISP yet, so the rest of us, even Brewers at Bells, are still free to like things you don't.

My favorite Bell's beer was the Maillard's Odyssey (Imperial Dark Ale) in the Beer Camp Across America sampler.

I was lucky enough to be able to try the whole sampler on draft at a Sierra Nevada event. This beer brought me back to roasty / malty beers.

I actually think Bell's is a little under-appreciated on BA. Expedition Stout is by far my favorite RIS. The flavor profile it attains after 1-2 years of cellaring is unlike many others.

Oberon is another under-appreciated brew. It's not my favorite, but I think it's got a somewhat unique flavor profile.

I could go on: Third Coast, Hopslam, Two-Hearted, Kalamazoo Stout, etc...they are all interesting brews and somewhat unique. And remember This One Goes to 11?

They brew a solid line of beers. In fact, for such a widely distributed brewer, I think they have a fairly low percentage of beers that fall into the "meh" category.

Had my first Smitten of the season last night(in cans!!) and it was as great as I remember. Bell's is one of my favorite brewers and always has been. Hopslam, Black Note, Expedition Stout, Oberon, Smitten, Two Hearted and Best Brown are all world class and with the exception of the first two I mention, all available whenever I want as long as they are in season. Can't really beat that.

I agree with the exception that Oberon and Best Brown are above average for their styles. Bell's beers are kinda like playing the card game War as a kid. There's some Kings and Aces but there's also some deuces and treys.

I find myself buying less and less over time. If it weren't for Third Coast Consecrator & Expedition not all. I enjoy Two Hearted but can never even find it close to fresh. Black Note, never seen it, still waiting. I'm with you on Oberon, when I want something that blah I'll get some Boulevard Wheat.

First off. You are so very wrong on some of what you find average that it pretty much dismisses your initial complaint. Oberon, and Best Brown are the first that come to mind. Second of all. Not every brewery can accomplish homeruns with everything they do. In fact, nearly none of them can. Third of all. Why so many question marks??? Fourth.
If you think you can do better. The ring is yours. That's why beer like this exists in the first place. People wanted something they could drink. So... Get funding. Get knowledge. Get salespeople. And work those numbers.
Fifth, what is this thing about world class? It's such a terribly subjective and for the people that fall for such monkey muffins, such a whiney category to make distinctions about.
    meh.
