    Just wondering. The flavor and mouthfeel seem similiar. I am really getting to like "The Muddy". The only non BA American Imperial Stout I like as much is Old Rasputin.

    No it's not. Big John and Nightstalker, if I'm not mistaken are the base beers for BCBS. Muddy is actually a newer beer.

    Neither of those are the BCS base.

    As far as I know, Cook County Stout is the base for BCBS (Big John and Nightstalker are...variants, I guess). The Muddy is something new from GI since the AB-InBev acquisition.

    @Vav, does that sound right?

    Correct, ive only ever seen the BCS base referred to as Cook County stout, and that hasnt been available tothe public in a looooooooooong time.

    The reason is mostly cost, from what ive gathered. That beer is so expensive to produce, and taxing on the brew system, that it all goes into barrels for maximum ROI.

    Also, and this is more anecdotal, but being on the brewdeck when that's being grained in is an awe inspiring experience. It's SO MUCH GRAIN and you can hear the strain on the mash tun and deck from the weight.

    Everyone who has said Cook County is correct. In other news does anyone know that last time it was available? Definately on the list of "would love to try"

    I've never had it myself - but have heard it's not very palatable since the recipe is set up specifically for barrel aging.

    The "big john / nightstalker is the base for BCBS" myth is something I hear/see a lot

    When this thread came up during the great BCBS thread blitz of '14, I believe I was corrected (as I to thought it was nightstalker) by someone that linked an article that showed it was actually a base stout that was never intended on seeing the light of day un-BA'd. I'd link the post but going through all those threads would take an eternity.

    I've had it only in barrel spikes early on in the bcs aging process. I remember describing it as a vehicle for the barrel.

    I don't work within Goose Island, but I looked in the AB revenue management system (which has at least 20 Goose Island products I've never even heard of, so even the rare brewery only stuff) and there is no Cook County Stout even in the system, so it has never been sold to the public under that name (at least since AB has owned them)

    Correct, it was never sold at all. The story goes it was available once or twice during CBC2010 events, although i cannot confirm that...the one fucking week out of the past 10 years i get the flu...:angry:
